Job Description

General Position Summary


This position is responsible for developing, managing, and implementing the City's sustainability strategies and policies, including the management of the Burien Climate Action Plan and the administration of the City's solid waste contract. The Sustainability Manager leads a range of projects to support sustainability programs including projects to address stormwater, energy, water conservation, green buildings, solid waste, emergency management, and air quality. The Sustainability Manager also supports compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit requirements.


Essential Functions


  • Prepare and distribute print-based and digital environmental educational materials.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relations with the public, community leaders, local school district, civic organizations, businesses, community groups, and other government agencies.
  • May supervisor staff, interns, and/or volunteers as assigned.
  • Serves as lead coordinator for annual interjurisdictional StormFest event.
  • Draft, monitor and maintain reports of sustainability programs including the Burien Climate Action Plan, solid waste and stormwater programs.
  • Serve as the City's main point of contact on sustainability issues with community and interest groups.
  • Develop and execute educational and outreach programs for environmentally focused policies in the city, including stormwater, water quality and watershed health.
  • Manages consultants and contracts.
  • Draft and review policy and code development related to environmental, energy, economic, and social sustainability initiatives.
  • Administrate contracts with service providers including the City of Burien's solid waste contract.
  • Establish methods for monitoring, benchmarking, and evaluating the impacts of the Burien Climate Action Plan.
  • Supports the City's Emergency Management programs.
  • Track NPDES Permit requirements related to stormwater education and outreach efforts.
  • Facilitate the interdepartmental Climate Action Team.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Lead the implementation of the Burien Climate Action Plan.
  • Manages the development, implementation, and monitoring of government policies, programs, and initiatives that promote local sustainability.
  • Assists the Miller-Walker Basin Stewardship Program to expand restoration to other parts of the City.
  • Assist departments in securing grants to improve or implement sustainability programs.
  • Supports and models the identified vision, values and behaviors of the organization.


Secondary Functions


  • Prepare specifications and develop requests for proposals (RFPs) for public/private projects; analyze responses and make recommendations on proposals.
  • Performs water quality and quantity monitoring and data collection.
  • Serves as project manager for community projects (i.e. - rain gardens, neighborhood culvert improvements, etc.)
  • Support community outreach projects across all City departments.
  • Serves on and participates in various employee committees.
  • Updates the City website with information on sustainability programs, including stormwater, solid waste, and energy.


Education And/or Experience


Two years college level coursework in environmental science, engineering, urban planning, education, urban design, or related field AND two years of work experience in stormwater management, an environmental science, or education or a combination of education, training and experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the position.


Special Requirements


  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
