Job Description
Position Description

The Survey Technician provides technical expertise and advice for complex surveying projects and performs specialized surveying activities under the supervision of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor. The Survey Technician usually requires contact with governmental and private entities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
  • Produces metes and bounds descriptions, boundary surveys, topographic surveys, plats and other survey related deliverables.
  • Develops detailed drawings in AutoCAD/Civil 3D to comply with county standards, TXDOT, and City of Houston platting requirements with strong emphasis on CAD capabilities, accuracy, and speed.
  • Prepares data required for roadway, utility, and storm water design.
  • Interprets field crew notes, analyze and process conventional and GPS data.
  • Performs deed analysis and prepares working sketches from deeds and other sources for field and other uses.
  • Prepares surfaces, calculate quantities, areas, and the like, commensurate with civil engineering.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
Experience:
  • Trimble Business Center
  • Leica Infinity
  • Seven (7) years of surveying and/or engineering experience.
  • AutoCAD/Civil 3D experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience as a Survey Technician.
  • Carlson Survey Software
  • Experience with one of the following surveying and engineering software required:
    • Carlson Survey Software
    • Trimble Business Center
    • Leica Infinity
Licensure:
Must have a valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Must be willing to learn new software programs as needed, and become proficient with their use.
  • Must have a strong sense of attention to detail to ensure the professional appearance and accuracy of survey products.
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated and results-oriented professional.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly motivated and ready to perform job duties with little or no supervision.
  • Must be comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively, within and outside the department, to produce Surveying and Mapping deliverables in conformance with established standards.
  • Possess strong time management skills and effectively prioritize and schedule multiple tasks/initiatives.
  • Must be adaptable and able to listen and learn from others as well as teach or offer assistance to peers.

Preferences

  • Associates Degree in Surveying or higher
  • Field experience working with a survey crew, with experience as a Party Chief prior to being promoted to a Survey Technician
  • Some college coursework in surveying, engineering, or related courses
  • Successful completion/team member of large scale project work such as TxDOT highway projects, county government roadway and/or drainage improvement projects, and land development projects.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time:
    • Approximately 90% of duties will be performed indoors in a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, air conditions, and noise levels.
    • Approximately 10% of duties will be performed outdoors where there will be exposure to heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, wind, and dust.
    • Must be willing to work in various weather and working conditions when visiting a field location.
  • Approximately 90% of duties will be performed indoors in a normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, air conditions, and noise levels.
