Surgical Technician- Non Certified Or Certified - Full Time - Days

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for assessing the needs of their assigned cases. Surgical technologists work under the direct supervision of the surgeon ensuring a safe environment and properly functioning equipment for their assigned procedures. The Surgical Technologist must be able to combine their knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures and instrumentation to facilitate the surgeon's performance during invasive procedures. Prepares supplies and equipment for assigned surgical procedure. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves utilizing principles of asepsis. Sets up sterile field with insturments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions. Performs appropriate surgical counts with the Registered Nurse Circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed as established in Hospital Policy. Gowns and Gloves Surgeon and assistants. Assist in the establishment of the sterile field (draping). Passes instruments, etc., to the Surgeon and/or First Assistant. Maintains a "Surgical Conscience". Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments utilized for decontamination. Assists other surgical team members with decontamination and cleaning of the operating room at completion of surgical procedure. Assists in the preparation of the operating room for the next patient. May have to carry out other technical tasks during a surgical procedure which include: Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon. Suctions the operative site. Applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon. Connects drains to suction apparatus. Applies dressings to closed wounds. Order supplies through ProClick/SMS systems. Data Entry (journal and charging). Scheduling of procedures. Equipment ordering and repairs. Autoclaves and Steris monitoring. Biological and record keeping. QI data collection and reporting. Instrument inventory.
Must be a flexible person willing to learn new regulations, adhere to new requirements and keep up with changes. Good knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical instruments and clinical skills. Responsible for knowledge relating to development, safety, and physiological needs of each patient ranging in age from infancy through to mature adulthood. Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology or other avenue of entry acceptable to the Association of Surgical Technologists.
Preferred One (1) year experience as Operating Room Tech. Surgical Technologist certification. Required: Surgical Technologist certification. Able to competently scrub and take call for all services. Serve as preceptor for new hires and newly hired Surgical Techs. Act as Assistant Instructor for Surgical Tech students rotating through SMH's OR.
