  • Supports development and implementation of a comprehensive supplier quality program to include vendor/manufacturer as well as raw material qualification based on risk assessment. Establishes and documents the criteria for vendor/manufacturer and raw qualification.
  • The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Analyzes supplier data and trends issues proactively identifying supplier issues. Participates in continuous improvement projects across functional areas of the business to help improve supplier performance and ensure proper supplier quality management systems are maintained and consistently followed.
  • Own and resolve supplier related corrective action plans. Analyze supplier related defect data to determine root cause. Ensure that supplier deviation technical rationale and corrective actions are acceptable and appropriate. Partner with suppliers to develop compliant solutions and improvements.
  • Executes the assessment of new and existing global nutritional/dietary supplement manufacturers and suppliers to ensure quality and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ability to perform duties under general direction and independently perform assignments with only general criteria for expected results.
  • Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Supplier Quality Specialist to join our Pharmachem (Nutraceuticals) business at our Kearny, NJ location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Quality function. This position will report to the Director of Quality.
  • Liaise with Global Supply Base Quality to establish supplier audit criteria.
  • Coordinates the vendor/manufacturer qualification process. Develops a project schedule for the approval process based on an established priority system and input from Sales, R&D, Purchasing, and Quality Control. Ensures timely approval of vendor/manufacturers based on project schedule.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a matrix organization across multiple cultural and geographic boundaries.


In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Knowledge of quality principles, audit protocols, inspection procedures, data integrity principles, FDA regulations, and GMP as applied to nutritionals/dietary supplements.
  • Knowledge of Food and Drug Administration regulations and guidelines including 21 CFR 110, 111, and 117. Basic knowledge about sample collection, lab sampling, Good Manufacturing Practices, and quality management practices. PCQI certification is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline; 3 years related experience and/or training in food/dietary supplement/pharmaceutical industry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possesses strong project and time management skills to ensure assigned activities are prioritized and completed with required timelines.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement tools/processes to participate in projects across functional areas of the business to resolve supplier issues.
  • In depth knowledge of food safety, product quality programs, preventive QC methods, HACCP, GMP, Allergen issues and manufacturing security measures.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a matrix organization across multiple cultural and geographic boundaries.
  • Ability to perform duties under general direction and independently perform assignments with only general criteria for expected results.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • Experience with supplier quality management is highly preferred. Experience in conducting supplier audits is desirable. Ability to travel up to 25% may be required.
  • Experience in dietary supplement supplier QA strongly preferred.
  • GFSI (BRC, SQF, FSSC 22000, etc.) audit certification knowledge.
  • This employee is responsible to establish a supplier quality management program within the Nutraceuticals business unit.
