Quantitative Research and Data Analytics Internship

The Department

Looking for an outstanding opportunity to demonstrate your analytical attitude to impact financial decision-making? Quantitative Research and Data Analytics Internships within Fidelity’s Asset Management division give students the opportunity to do just that. These groups are seeking students with technical backgrounds who are interested in using those skills to assist our Research Analysts, Portfolio Managers, and employees in their decision-making processes.

Education and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience/interest/skill in quantitative analysis or research
  • Academic or intellectual interest in financial markets
  • Must be currently enrolled and working towards a Master’s, or PhD degree during Summer 2024
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills, as well as the ability to clearly articulate findings

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills

Internship Opportunities Include:

Advanced Data Analytics Internship

The Data Analytics Intern will work closely within the Advanced Data Analytics Team to provide unique analysis supporting research analysts and portfolio managers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Field(s) of study must be in a technical area (STEM) and/or Finance/Economics with a strong programming background
  • Assisting with various projects to support stock-specific work
  • Developing knowledge and insights from large and/or unstructured data sets
  • Web scraping, text analytics, and automated reporting
  • Using mathematic/econometric/data science techniques to collect, process, and analyze alternative data sets

Interns may use resources including Wall Street contacts and internal groups like data and systems support, market data, and research services.

We are seeking students who are skilled in modern analytic techniques (e.g. Python, R, pandas, SQL, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, etc.).

Strategic Advisers Quantitative Research Associate Internship

Strategic Advisers’ Quantitative Research group partners with investment teams to deliver outstanding risk-adjusted performance for their wide range of investment solutions. The Quantitative Research Associate Intern will work within the group to support the investment team’s processes and analytical requirements as well as offer thought leadership on aspects of quantitative asset allocation and portfolio management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with other quant researchers as well as the analytics group on project work
  • Developing portfolio analytics graphics for an improved user experience
  • Working closely on and testing the Multi-Asset Class fund alpha model

We are seeking students with web graphing tools and experience using SQL, R/Matlab is required.

Global Asset Allocation Quantitative Internship

The Global Asset Allocation Quantitative Research group provides multi-asset class research and analysis to portfolio managers and other investment professionals in support of our broad range of investment solutions ranging from Target Date retirement strategies to liquid alternatives. This research is vital in helping portfolio managers to select the most suitable investment options and manage asset class and risk exposures across all investment solutions delivered by GAA. The intern on this team works with research analysts to develop and evaluate innovative systematic strategies, improve frameworks for global tactical asset allocation, and refine our tools for risk-aware, outcome-driven portfolio construction.

We are seeking candidates who have strong quantitative, modeling, programming, and data analysis skills with the ability to think analytically, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively.

Global Asset Allocation Research Internship

The Asset Allocation Research Team (AART) conducts economic, fundamental, and quantitative research to develop asset allocation recommendations for Fidelity’s portfolio managers and investment teams. AART utilizes a multi-time horizon, multi-disciplinary approach to generate insights on macroeconomic, policy, and financial-market trends and their implication for strategic and active asset allocation. The intern on this team works with research on priority projects that may be related to portfolio construction, or macro signaling methodologies, or other related asset-allocation analysis.

We are seeking candidates who have strong analytical abilities in core technical areas (mathematics, economics, statistics, programming), have broad intellectual curiosity, and who think creatively and critically. The candidate will also have strong communication and collaboration skills.

Systematic ESG Research Internship

The Systematic ESG Research team works with analysts and portfolio managers across QRI, as well as stakeholders across Asset Management to conduct research and development on quantitative ESG factors, models, and ratings and deliver portfolio construction and risk analytics to support Fidelity’s funds and research efforts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing new models to facilitate the research and portfolio construction process.
  • Collaborating with team members and portfolio managers on the design of sustainable investment strategies.
  • Developing new analytical tools to incorporate sustainability considerations into the portfolio management process.
  • Partnering with other quant researchers to evaluate complex data.

We are seeking candidates who have strong quantitative, programming, and database skills (Python, SQL, Java, C, #,+,and ++) with the ability to think analytically, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively.

Systematic Equity Strategies

Systematic Equity Strategies is a systematic, research driven investment manager, offering a wide range of investment strategies across multiple asset classes. Since our inception in 2001, we have used a combination of theory, data and technology to better understand financial markets and develop innovative investment solutions for our clients.

Your internship with Systematic Equity Strategies will be centered around a 10 week research project, where you will:

  • Develop hypotheses and theoretical models describing how investors behave and markets operate
  • Distill the evidence and theory into new insights about how financial markets work
  • Test theory against data, refining hypotheses and models in the process
  • Collect and analyze data needed to test these models

Your research project may lead to implementation, impacting the way SES invests.

During your internship you will collaborate closely with the research team, a collaborative, yet demanding group of individuals. They will provide guidance, support, and ideas. You will also be exposed to the research of others, participating in research meetings and discussions, where you will be expected to offer your own suggestions and ideas.

Fixed Income Quantitative Research

Fidelity is seeking to hire a Quantitative Analyst Intern to join its Quantitative Research and Investments division. This position will be located in Fidelity’s office in Merrimack, New Hampshire. The analyst intern will work with traders and portfolio managers on the money market team to develop quantitative techniques, models, and tools to support and strengthen the investment process.

This is a rare opportunity to work with high caliber investment professionals in one of the premier fixed income investment management divisions in the world. Quantitative Equity Research Internship

The candidate will serve as a Quantitative Equity Research Analyst Intern in the Equity Quantitative team. In this role, the Intern will work with analysts on the team to provide fundamental Equity portfolio managers with quantitative alpha generation, portfolio construction, and risk management analytics. Responsibilities include researching and developing quantitative factors and models, analyzing structured and novel data sources to generate alpha, and investigating techniques to improve portfolio construction and optimization. The Intern will publish his or her investment research and present to the team and to portfolio managers.

We are seeking individuals who have the following characteristics:

  • Master’s degree in finance, quantitative economics, computer science, math, or the physical sciences; or an MBA combined with an undergraduate education in the above fields
  • Demonstrated math, statistics, and programming skills, along with a passion for investing in the financial markets
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of statistical software and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, SAS, SQL, C++)
