Job Description

Title: Stem Lab Facilitator and Technician

Location: Chicago, IL

Reports to: Director of Operations

FLSA Status: Part-Time

Rate of Pay: Up to $28.00 hourly

Position Overview

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) lab technician is responsible for the management, training, and maintenance of the STEM laboratory. This is a non-chemical lab.


Responsibilities

Management and Organization:

  • Overseeing the operations of the STEM laboratory.
  • Coordinating training and resources for lab training activities.
  • Managing inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials.


Equipment Setup, Safety, Compliance, and Maintenance:

  • Regularly reviewing and updating safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment for all lab users.
  • Performing routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of lab equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Setting up and configuring laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Identifying and addressing equipment repair or replacement needs.
  • Ensuring strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.


Educational and Technical Support:

  • Assisting instructors and students during experiments and demonstrations, offering technical guidance and troubleshooting.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive quick guides and instructional materials for lab equipment and procedures.
  • Training and providing technical assistance and support to instructors, students, and other lab users on properly using equipment, safety protocols, and experimental techniques.
  • Troubleshooting technical issues and offering solutions to ensure smooth laboratory operations.

Innovation and Improvement:

  • Staying informed about advancements in STEM education, equipment, and technology.
  • Researching and recommending new or updated equipment, tools, and software to enhance the lab's capabilities and learning experience.
  • Collaborating with educators and colleagues to develop innovative lab activities and projects that align with curriculum objectives.

Resource Allocation:

  • Allocating resources efficiently, including budget management for equipment maintenance, repair, and acquisition.


Required Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and equipment maintenance
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Familiarity with laboratory machinery and software for 3D-Printers, Wood Markers, and other machines in a working technical lab.
  • A degree and/or 2+ years in a STEM field such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, particularly in an educational setting


Required Competencies

  • Writing experience preferred
  • Ability to problem solve, analyze information and demonstrate professionalism
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Excel, PowerPoint, & Word and Google Suite Applications: Classroom, Docs, Slides, Sheets & Drive
  • Available in person on Saturdays during the academic school year (September -June).
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Time management, Patience, Creativity, and Interpersonal skills

Working conditions:

  • This position will require some safety gear to be worn (gloves, safety glasses).
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
  • This position operates in a clerical office and school setting.


Physical requirements

  • Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: demonstrating and visual inspection involving minor defects on machinery.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for up to 8 hours a day.
