The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is the state’s consumer protection agency. Established in 1974, SCDCA is charged with protecting consumers from inequities in the marketplace through advocacy, mediation, enforcement and education. Our Identity Theft Division offers education and guidance to consumers related to identity theft and scams.


Primary Purpose Of Your Role


SCDCA is seeking a candidate who will be responsible for data collection and analysis related to the agencies data regarding complaints, ID Theft reports and scams.


Example Of Duties


  • Assist in collecting data to respond to public inquiries (FOIA) regarding identity theft, scams and consumer complaints.
  • Analyzing the data to create monthly reports for Director can be used in power points for commission and council meetings as well as trend analysis
  • Under the supervision of Unit director create and maintain reporting policy and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for coordinating with external vendors regarding DCA system updates and troubleshooting issues for staff.
  • Troubleshooting issues with database and handling any request for changes or updates to the system.
  • Contribute to individual quality and productivity goals by meeting standards focused on fulfillment of organizational turnaround time expectations, accuracy and security.
  • Creating Auditing Reports for management to ensure accountability goals and measures are being met.
  • Reviewing data from other states and seeing how it relates to current events in our state.
  • Preparing the monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports using Complaints and IDTU/Scams Data from internal databases and complaint portal reports.
  • Creating Charts and Graphs for meetings or presentations with location specific information as requested.
  • As needed answer calls from identity theft and scam victims, collecting information and providing appropriate guidance.
  • Conducting data analysis using Excel and Access.
  • Maintaining the procedures manual for entering and maintaining data to internal databases.


Minimum And Additional Requirements


: A high school degree or GED


  • Independent decision making and discretion are essential requirements.
  • Exceptional data entry and keyboard experience.
  • Clerical or paraprofessional experience involving the compilation of data and statistics.
  • Must be able to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and deal courteously with the general public and staff.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Professional demeanor and attitude including dress, timeliness, and dependability.
  • Must be extremely adaptable and able to follow a task or directive through, despite unfamiliarity with task at hand.
  • Ability to handle multi-line phone and multi-task.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word, as well as hardware devices such as scanners, copiers and fax machines.
  • Ability to learn, organize and present written information in a clear, concise and accurate manner.
  • Above average knowledge of state and federal identity theft laws.
  • Ability to prioritize task completion according to deadlines and goals and complete a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Access and Excel Power User including development of information gathering systems, i.e., data analysis of changing information from raw data to useful information using Excel pivot tables and chart building skills.
  • A bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of related experience; An associate degree and three (3) years of related experience or high school degree or GED and five (5) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and training.
  • Knowledge of methods of research design, data collection, data manipulation, data analysis and presentation of information.
