This journalist should have a track record of high productivity and the ability to build a robust network of sources. They must be able to juggle a mix of longer national trend pieces with daily stories, quick-turnaround pieces based on news developments, case studies of successful practice, and solutions-oriented coverage relevant to and useful for principals and other education leaders. The candidate must be skilled at spotting big developments in education policy and practice and explaining with accuracy and authority how it will impact school leaders.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Meet daily and longer-term deadlines consistently
  • Pitch and deliver a mix of daily and longer-term enterprise work on the beat
  • Build and maintain a thorough understanding of assigned beat
  • Adhere to Education Week and Associated Press style
  • Assist with and moderate live and virtual events for Education Week as assigned
  • Contribute to a weekly newsletter for principals
  • Contribute to print production duties, such as proofreading, as assigned
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Education Week audience through audience data analytics and focus groups
  • Write clear, authoritative articles that present complex information and issues fairly and completely
  • Collaborate regularly with visual journalists and digital news strategists to conceive and deliver a variety of compelling storytelling forms

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Ability and willingness to travel on occasion for reporting assignments
  • Strong command of issues animating the K-12 field and profession with a keen eye for spotting daily news opportunities and emerging trends.
  • Versatility and adaptability in working with all members of editorial team and wider EdWeek organization
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Excellent story ideation and building skills, writing prowess, and line editing abilities, as well as command of AP style and EW style
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to foster creativity and collaboration with editing team, fellow reporters, visual and digital journalists, social media and audience analytics teams.
  • Excellent priority setting and time management skills with ability to juggle multiple projects
  • A minimum of 7 years of daily journalism experience, including beat reporting, writing, and partnering with visual and digital journalists.
  • A sophisticated understanding of audience analytics and how to use the data to help make informed decisions on coverage, framing, and audience.
