Job Description
The Role:
Moderna is working to develop first-in-class messenger RNA (mRNA) based medicines. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Engineer II to join our Drug Product Development group to drive Packaging Development activities for our current and future portfolio of products.
You will be responsible for secondary packaging development for Moderna products for global markets, including material screening and selection, package design, qualification, tech transfer and support of regulatory filings. You will help build a network and work with vendors / manufacturing sites for implementation of packaging, including tooling design and construction, testing and qualification.
The position will involve a combination of guiding laboratory experimental work as required, documentation, and interaction with multiple stakeholder functions, project teams, manufacturing sites, and vendors.
The role is based in Moderna’s Technology Center campus in Norwood, MA.
Here is What You Will Do:
  • Prepare and finalize packaging trade dress in coordination with site manufacturing teams, also finalize key line drawings/technical specifications for the secondary packaging components.
  • Author and review packaging development and regulatory documentation
  • Work closely with DP leadership and stakeholders (Commercial, Marketing, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory etc.) to design, develop and implement the appropriate package in a timely manner for our global products.
  • Provide scientific and technical packaging expertise for the design and development of packaging systems including packaging component definition and process definition.
  • Provide technical support to production packing teams (external and internal) for smooth product launches.
  • Identify and evaluate packaging component vendors, change part development, support FAT or SAT for packaging line equipment, as required, throughout Moderna’s manufacturing site network.
  • Review and approve the secondary packaging component specifications, test procedures, manufacturing procedures, and equipment qualification protocols and reports as per site requirements.
  • Create, develop, implement, and refine novel packaging technologies and adapt standard methods and techniques independently.
Here is What You Will Bring to the Table:
  • Experience working in matrix teams preferable. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of material manufacturing and converting, product/packaging interaction, barrier properties, stability, global pharmaceutical packaging regulations, and package testing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support building productive relationships with suppliers and colleagues.
  • Strong priority setting skills and track record of developing and implementing new packaging designs.
  • Minimum of 4 years (PhD), 8 years (MS), 10 years (BS) industry experience in pharmaceutical packaging development, with preference for parenteral products
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and quality attributes for packaging components.
