Job Description

The Opportunity:

The Senior Director of the Project Management Office (PMO) will lead a team of up to 10 experienced project managers within the corporate Science & Innovation (S&I) function and will report to the leader of the New Product Introduction (NPI) team. The PMO will be responsible for stewarding a portfolio of complex technical projects, from both the innovation funnel and the research & development (R&D) pipeline and will drive cross functional project teams to execute on budget and on schedule through a structured stage-gate process using both waterfall and agile methodologies. The Senior Director will be responsible for balancing the allocation of technical resources across projects to manage trade-offs and accelerate the commercialization of new product and process innovations. Finally, the leader will teach and train elements of project management across the S&I function to foster a culture of discipline across the organization.


How you will impact WestRock:

* Lead and provide direction to an experienced team of project managers to steward a portfolio of complex projects within the S&I function to deliver on strategic growth imperatives.

* Foster a project management community of practice within the S&I function and across WestRock and champion effective and disciplined use of stage gate process to drive decision making.

* Collaborate with a variety of leaders across functions to ensure clarity and alignment on role sorts using a RACI framework.

* Balance assignment of projects to project managers.

* Ensure quality and completeness of deliverables across all functions at stage gate reviews to drive the integrated flow of projects from development to commercialization.

* Implement the use of project management tools to measure progress and drive efficiencies across the portfolio.

* Develop a resourcing model to support business priorities and manage technical resource allocations across the portfolio to manage trade-offs and accelerate the commercialization of new product and process innovations.

* Consult with and influence management at various levels across functions and business units to ensure awareness and alignment on critical matters and drive issue resolution.

* Routinely develop and provide portfolio and project status updates to senior management on a monthly basis through Innovation Product Reviews (IPRs), and drive quarterly project prioritization with the businesses.

* Develop the role profile for effective project management at WestRock, and perform routine talent assessments, identify gaps, and drive professional development plans for S&I project managers.

* Coach, mentor and teach key skills in leadership, stakeholder management, problem solving, risk management, and budgeting to S&I project managers.

* Recruit top talent to the organization.


What you will need:

* PMI certification (e.g., PMP, ACP, CSM) with demonstrated knowledge and experience in Agile principles, practices, and tools.

* A bachelor’s degree in a physical science or engineering discipline.

* 10+ years’ of leadership experience in a large multinational industrial or consumer products company.

* 5+ years of proven expertise in Portfolio Management with the ability to manage multiple large projects simultaneously and prioritize work.

* Experience driving disciplined project execution through a stage-gate process.

* Experience managing a diverse portfolio of complex R&D projects across both short and long term time horizons.

* A commercial mindset with a bias for action, with an ability to set clear goals and drive accountability to meet performance, timing, and financial targets.

* Effective communications skills (verbal and written), with experience presenting to/interacting with senior leaders.

* Ability to grow, develop, and lead a team of a senior project managers.

* Agility & change leadership mindset.

* Ability to prioritize, organize, and delegate work to others.

* Experience with Lean Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement principles.
