Job Description
How You’ll Contribute
The Storytelling team works to expand the organization’s impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, and data visualization. As one of the largest funders to individual storytellers in the world, it also identifies key grantmaking, and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. Much of the team's programmatic activity is focused on identifying and building capacity for the next generation of diverse storytellers.
Reporting to The Geographer, the Specialist, Geography & Mapping will be responsible for working with the Education, Science & Innovation, Global Explorer Network, and other teams at NGS to create, implement, and manage GIS and mapping solutions. They will assist with geo-enabling our organization through geospatial tools and methods and promoting the field of geography.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include
  • Create, implement, and manage GIS and mapping solutions (including training and specific work projects) to support use of GIS and mapping technology for NG Education and other National Geographic programs and initiatives. (30%)
  • Stay current on Esri ArcGIS and other mapping technology. (10%)
  • Coordinate the Geography & Mapping team’s work with NG Education. (20%)
  • Contribute to developing GIS and mapping support for Explorers’ projects. (30%)
  • Assist the Technology team to support geospatial applications within our NGS GIS Infrastructure and with our partners. (10%)
Educational Background
Bachelor's degree in Geography or a related discipline required.
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
3+ years of combined work experience in:
  • Work with industry standard software systems for database management, geographic analysis, and cartographic production
  • Developing GIS and mapping solutions for education, non-profit work, and/or public audiences
  • Experience in training others in GIS and mapping skills is a plus
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
  • Must have strong communications skills for oral and written presentation of geographic solutions proposals.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the latest industry standard mapmaking and geographic information system software (must include Esri ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Cloud).
  • Should have excellent organization skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressure of tight deadlines.
  • Should be team oriented, but confident in the value of their own ideas, contribution, and role, and be able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Must have cartography and data visualization skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of creating training materials for mapping and GIS technology
  • Geospatial analysis or programming skills are a plus.

The salary range for this position starts a $72,000
