Job Description

Hiring Department


Veterinary Medicine and Surgery



Provide emotional support and grief counseling to clients and staff/faculty of the Veterinary Health Center regarding their companion pets’ health diagnosis, medical treatment, quality of life, and end of life assessment. Provide staff/faculty with crisis support and wellbeing needs and facilitate referral to external mental health provider. Work with psychologists of the College of Veterinary Medicine for student who need similar crisis support. Design and facilitate a companion animal support group and expand as needed for accessibility for all clients. Enhance the Veterinary Health Center’s services including euthanasia of animal, memorialization, and follow-ups with clients. Develop brochures and resources for clients regarding medical treatment, pet loss, and the grief process, euthanasia, veterinary social work services, and the human-animal bond. Design, implement, and conduct veterinary social work program at MU Veterinary Health Center. Provide management of student workers and volunteers as the program progresses. Lead presentations to students, staff, faculty, residents, interns, and volunteers. Participate in teaching with other University departments.

Salary Range: $49,000 - $77,000
GGS Grade: 09E

Minimum Qualifications


A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Licensure as required for position.

Preferred Qualifications


One year experience in general clinical counseling specifically providing support in the field of grief, death and dying.
