Sitter Emergency Depatment Jobs

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the professional nurse, the sitter provides supervision/observation for patient(s), to ensure safety of the patient.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY: None

NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position interacts with physicians, nursing staff, patients and families.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Supports the mission, vision and values of the hospital.

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times, keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.

Reports to the charge nurse or nurse assigned to patient(s) at the beginning of each shift for expectations regarding specific care and observation of the patient(s).

Provides close observations to assigned patient(s). Does not leave patient(s) unattended and intervenes as needed to prevent patient(s) from falling or dislodging medical tubes/IVs.

Provides emotional support and provides basic comfort. Engages in appropriate conversation/diversion and companionship to patient(s).

Assures a safe environment by keeping patient area quiet and free of unnecessary activity.

Assists in meal tray set-up, feeds if necessary and appropriate as directed by the RN. Offers assistance with washing hand or face and may assist nursing personnel in making beds.

Reports any change in patient(s) activities, behaviors, or unusual incidents in a timely manner to the nursing staff.

Seeks guidance from other team members when unsure of appropriate actions and assumes responsibility for seeing things through to completion as evidenced by direct observation and/or feedback.

Remains alert during entire shift.

Respects patient’s privacy and does not use patient’s telephone or personal belongings.

Maintains a professional, neutral position in all conversations with the patient and/or family.

Reports to charge nurse or nurse assigned to patient(s) at the end of shift and provides report regarding patient(s) behavioral status.

Attends in-services and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager.

CORE COMPETENCIES:
CPR preferred.

Good physical and mental health.

Understanding, patient and tact in dealing with patients, visitors and others.

Must maintain confidentiality of patients.

Must have good communication skills.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma preferred.

Some previous healthcare experience required.
