What You’ll Be Doing:

We seek a highly skilled and motivated Windows Engineer with extensive experience in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Desktop as a Service (DaaS) technologies. The ideal candidate will help itopia build and maintain silent installation packages for a wide variety of applications for our DaaS solutions. This role will also be responsible for maintaining and improving automated desktop image build scripts that include Windows customizations and lockdowns, primarily using PowerShell.The candidate should also have a deep understanding of Windows Server and Desktop technologies. This person will be responsible for deploying and maintaining VDI and DaaS solutions, ensuring high levels of performance, reliability, and security.


Some of the Specific Role Responsibilities:

  1. Windows Application Packaging and Deployment: The Windows Engineer will be responsible for packaging and deploying Windows applications, ensuring that they are optimized for VDI and DaaS environments.
  2. PowerShell Scripting: The candidate should have advanced knowledge of PowerShell scripting and be able to modify Windows behavior to automate and streamline VDI and DaaS deployment and management processes.
  3. Application Compatibility Testing: The Windows Engineer will perform compatibility testing for new and updated applications, ensuring that they function as intended within the VDI and DaaS environments. This includes validating application behavior, identifying potential issues, and implementing necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance.
  4. itopia CloudApps Application Catalog Support: The Windows Engineer will be responsible for supporting the itopia CloudApps application catalog, ensuring that applications continue to work properly as Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) update them. This includes testing updates, deploying patches, and making necessary adjustments to application packages.
  5. Continuous Improvement: The candidate will continuously improve the application catalog by identifying opportunities to optimize the application packaging process, update existing packages, and add new applications to the catalog based on user feedback and business requirements.
  6. ISV Relationship Management: The Windows Engineer will establish and maintain close working relationships with ISVs to procure application licenses for the organization. They will also document support escalation processes with each vendor to ensure efficient issue resolution and maintain a positive working relationship.
  7. Documentation and Reporting: The candidate will create and maintain documentation for application packaging processes, application catalog updates, and ISV support escalation procedures. They will also provide regular reports on the performance, usage, and reliability of the application catalog to key stakeholders.


Qualifications:

Expertise indicates that this is a core skill requirement, and you must be highly proficient at it; you have previously performed in a role where this skill was a primary function of your daily duties. Experience indicates that you have a working knowledge of the subject and have some professional experience with it. Familiarity indicates that you have some knowledge of the subject and may have some professional or personal experience with it.


  • Experience with UWP / Microsoft Store apps a plus
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud is a plus
  • Expertise in Windows PowerShell scripting
  • Expertise in Windows configuration via registry, WMI, and other scriptable interfaces
  • Expertise in application packaging / re-packaging for silent installation via MSI and other unattended installation tools
  • Familiarity with HashiCorp Packer
  • Experience with Git, source control, CI/CD
  • Familiarity with Windows VDI optimization is a plus
  • Experience with Windows Server and its differences from Windows 10/11 as an end-user desktop


Must Haves:

  • Demonstrable expertise in PowerShell scripting for Windows administration and automation. Knowledge of Win32 API is a plus.
  • Strong customer service orientation and commitment to meeting customer needs.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience may be substituted for formal education.
  • Extensive knowledge of Remote Desktop Services, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Amazon Workspaces.
  • Experience with identity platforms such as Active Directory, Google Identity Platform, Azure AD, and SAML.
  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Fluent in English (speak and write)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Proven experience with Windows application packaging and deployment using native "silent install" methodologies and MSI repackaging.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • At least 10 years of experience as a Microsoft Engineer with a focus on Windows Server and Desktop operating systems, including registry, GPO, user/roaming profiles, system configuration, and lockdown.
