Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the System; he/she manages the day-to-day operations of the Hospital and, in collaboration with the Vice President of Physician Practice Services, of United Regional Physician Group. Coordinates clinical, operational, and financial resources to optimize overall effectiveness and efficiency. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures as established by the System’s Board of Directors, CEO, and/or other authority as appropriate. He/she plays a key role in advancing the strategic priorities of the System and ensuring its continued viability and success.

In addition to serving as a strategic member of the Senior Leadership Team, ensures the effective
operations and continuous improvement of assigned departments and functions.


1. Exhibits behaviors consistent with the expectations of a United Regional senior leader, including ethics/integrity and commitment to passion, purpose, and pillars.
2. Leads, and oversees, day-to-day operations of the Hospital and System (working in collaboration with the VP of Physician Practice Services re: URPG).
3. In conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team, establishes and advances strategic initiatives and operational goals by working with other members of leadership, inclusive of Medical Staff and management at all levels. Reports, measures, and takes responsive action (e.g., recognition or corrective) as appropriate.
4. Works closely with the CFO to 1) plan and manage operating and capital budgets and 2) develop and assess fiscal viability of new (and ongoing) services.
5. Establishes and ensures implementation of methods to continuously achieve and strengthen quality of care within the organization, working collaboratively with the Medical Staff, personnel, and others to do so.
6. Works with the CMO to ensure appropriate utilization through collaboration with medical staff, clinical documentation specialists, and medical management.
7. Informs and advises the CEO of operational issues and solutions.
8. Mentors colleagues and direct reports to grow into highest potential levels of achievement, work allocation, systems training, performance evaluations, and the building of effective and efficient team dynamics.
9. Actively represents United Regional at, and participates in, applicable Medical Staff meetings.
Communicates and collaborates with physicians on operational issue resolution and strategic initiatives, ensuring involvement of the CEO, CMO, CNO and others as appropriate.
10. Actively coordinates multi-disciplinary Quality Council, serving as Co-Chair with appropriate medical staff leader.
11. Actively participates in Board of Directors’ meetings (and Board Committee meetings) as needed/as
12. Ensures compliant relationships with physicians and physician groups, overseeing and monitoring professional service agreements and recruitment contracts.
13. In conjunction with the CMO, ensures effective medical staff functions, including credentialing and peer review, in accordance with Board and Medical Staff bylaws and policies.
14. Participates in discussions with management and the Board of Directors re: purchase and/or construction of plant, property & equipment; strategic and/or programmatic investments; and contingencies as appropriate.
15. Understands the benefit of, and actively supports, the System’s participation in its TPC partnership to improve supply/services sourcing, performance improvement, and active use of analytics.
16. Represents the System as requested in co-management arrangements; oversees and ensures compliance with co-management operational agreements and legal regulations.
17. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other healthcare entities within community and region.



EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Health Care, Business, Public Administration, or other related discipline

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be analytical, a self-motivator, energetic, and have a proven track record of partnering with appropriate stakeholders in solving problems
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a senior operational leader for a like-sized hospital
  • Clinical background a plus
