A Senior Scrum Master at Crowe should have an Advanced Understanding of product development, Agile Values and Principles, and the Scrum Framework. At a Manager Level, a Scrum Master should be a master at facilitating scrum event and driving value from those scrum events as well as identifying impediments. They should be focused on teaching the appropriate teams the value of self-organization and be willing to allow the team to facilitate these events and only step in when asked, needed, or called upon. A Manager Level Scrum Master should be focused on driving continuous improvement by removing impediments outside the boundaries of the team’s self-organizing capabilities and by ensuring the team understands scrum and is enacting it using teaching/training, coaching, and mentoring skills. A Manager Level Scrum Master should spend as much time collaborating with the greater organization and senior leaders as they do with the Scrum Team. A Manager Level Scrum Master should already have at least an entry level Scrum Master Certification and preferably a secondary level certification. They should be actively pursuing further training and certifications to help improve and advance their skills as a facilitator, coach, teacher/trainer, and servant leader, transformation master, business master, and/or technical master.
Scrum Master Job Duties include:
Servant Leader (mastering):
- Influences those outside of the team using Facilitation, Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring skills when possible
- Promotes collaboration, self-organization, and helps the team and its individuals develop, perform and achieve synergy
- Selflessly leads the Scrum Team by influencing, asking the right questions, and encouraging collaborative discussion rather than directing and micromanaging
- Serves the Product Owner, the Scrum Team and the Organization by helping the team focus, identify goals, achieve results, and deliver value in whatever way necessary
- Promotes team ownership, collective and shared accountability, empowers the team and encourages transparency
- Helps the team build comradery and a foundation of trust
- Encourages the team by Schedules appropriate team celebrations when warranted
Facilitator/Scrum Event Value Driver (mastering, as needed and requested by the team, focused teaching and empowering the team to facilitate their own events while the Scrum Master focuses on the greater organization and facilitating collaboration outside of the team)
- Proactively and continuously seeks ways to improve the value obtained from the Scrum Events
- Timeboxes
- Definition of Done (as defined by the Team and the Organization)
- Facilitates/Coordinates communication between the Scrum Team and those outside of the team as needed
- Taskboards
- Schedules appropriate team celebrations
- Scrum Theory, Scum Framework and Scrum Best Practices
- Team Level Metrics as needed for identifying areas of improvement, etc.
- Agile Values and Principles
- Facilitates or Guides the Scrum Events for one or more teams, programs, or products as needed and ensures that guidelines around the following are enacted:
- Agile Values and Principles
- Scrum Theory, Scum Framework and Scrum Best Practices
- Timeboxes
- Definition of Done (as defined by the Team and the Organization)
- Team Agreements
- Taskboards
- Team Level Metrics as needed for identifying areas of improvement, etc.
- Proactively and continuously focuses on ways to help the Scrum Team maximize the value of the product they are delivering
- Team Agreements
Impediment/Risk/Continuous Improvement Identifier (mastering):
- Proactively identifies and facilitates discussions about impediments and dependencies at the team level and helps the team find resolutions
- Proactively drives process improvements and identifies action items needed to improve the team's Agile Maturity
- Proactively identifies and facilitates discussions about impediments and dependencies that are outside of the team's direct control and either leads resolution or collaborates with others to guide resolution
Teacher and Trainer (mastering):
- Responsible for ensuring that Scrum is understood and enacted by the scrum team(s)
- Provides training to teams, communities of practices, and the greater organization as needed
- Responsible for providing or coordinating appropriate team training around Agile/Scrum theories, principles, and best practices as needed
- Responsible for ensuring adherence to Agile Values and Principles, Scrum Theory and the Scrum Framework by the scrum team(s)
Coach (mastering)
- Coaching those outside of the scrum team to better understand which interactions are helpful to the scrum team and which interactions are not
- Coach/Service to the Team and Product Owner (mastering):
- Coaches the Product Owner on effective techniques for backlog management and how to arrange the product backlog to maximize value
- Coaches the Scrum Team to Understand the Need for Clear and Concise Backlog Items
- Coaches the Development Team in self-organization and cross-functionality
- Coaches the Development Team on ways to deliver high value products
- Coaches the Scrum Team on how to apply effective best practices for enacting Scrum
- Collaborates with other SM's and identifies ways to champion agile across Product/BU
- Proactively seeks ways to provide transparency of the team's goals and progress
- Coaches the Scrum Team on how to apply effective best practices for enacting Scrum
- Coaches the Development Team on ways to deliver high value products
- Proactively seeks ways to measure improvements through reporting metrics, dashboards, or other tools
- Coaches the Product Owner on effective techniques for backlog management and how to arrange the product backlog to maximize value
- Coaches the Development Team in self-organization and cross-functionality
- Coach/Service to the Organization and Stakeholders (growing and mastering):
- Collaborates with other SM's and identifies ways to champion agile across Product/BU
- Proactively seeks ways to provide transparency of the team's goals and progress
- Proactively seeks ways to measure improvements through reporting metrics, dashboards, or other tools
- Coaching those outside of the scrum team to better understand which interactions are helpful to the scrum team and which interactions are not
- Coaches the Scrum Team to Understand the Need for Clear and Concise Backlog Items
Mentor/Services to Team Members (growing and mastering)
- Proactively mentors others as requested or by sharing what they are learning within the communities of practices
- Counsels team members to resolve conflict when needed
Change Agent (growing)
- Leading and Coaching the BU/SDU in scrum adoption
- Identifying Organizational Level Impediments and helping to drive resolution
- Causing Change that increased the productivity of the scrum team(s)
- Planning scrum implementations within the BU/SDU
- Influencing best practices and growth in technical excellence, business mastery and transformation
- Working with Other Scrum Masters to increase the effectiveness of scrum in the organization
- Helping Employees and Stakeholder understand and enact Scrum in empirical product development
Guiding the BU/SDU on Scaled Agile Best Practices as needed
- Coordinating Risks, Issues, and Dependencies at the Program Level
- Facilitating Program Increment or Big Room Planning Sessions
- Facilitating Scrum of Scrums and Retro of Retros
- Removing Impediments at the Program Level
Master of their Craft/Lifelong Learner:
- Proficient Understanding of Lean, Kanban, and XP
- Is Proactively pursuing a better understanding around the concepts of Engineering Best Practices (Testing, XP Practices, etc.) and how these best practices help your team to become more Agile. Encouraging your team to learn more about these practices.
- Must possess an entry level Agile Certification or equivalent experience (PSM I, CSM, CSPO, PSPO, etc.) and be pursuing an advanced level certification (A-CSM, A-CSPO, PSM II, PSPO II, Scaled Agile or other)
- Is Proactively pursuing advanced level certifications
- 5-8+ years as a SM for multiple teams or as a Scrum Team Member in another Role
- Is proactively and continuously pursuing a deeper understanding of the Agile/Scrum Values, Principles and Best Practices
- Advanced Understanding of Agile Values, Principles, Best Practices and Roles
- Possesses a passion for Agile/Scrum and a relentless drive for personal growth
- Proactively seeking ways to grow as a SM and sharing what was learned with the teams/CoPs
- Proficient Understanding of Coaching Principles and Facilitation Techniques
- Advanced Level of Understanding of Product Development and SDLC Process
- Proactively seeks Coaching and Mentorship from senior leaders within the Organization and Pursues opportunities to collaborate with other Agilists in the greater community
- Growing in the areas of Technical Mastery, Business Mastery and Transformation Mastery Experience
