Overview:

The Design Services Group within the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to produce high quality engineering design packages. In this role you will collect and maintain records, technical models/drawings, and documents for the Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section. The NTE section is made up of Instrument Engineering, Source Development Engineering, Survey & Metrology, Manufacturing Engineering, and the Design Services Group. This role reports to the Design Services Group Leader and interfaces with engineers and scientists across the section. You may be responsible for reviewing and checking the work of other designers, just as others may also do the same for you.


This position resides in the Design Services Group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform tolerance stack ups to assure proper fit in assemblies
  • The SNS and HFIR facilities are in operation 24 hours per day and 7 days a week year- round. You may be occasionally required to support users and/or facilities during off hours or weekends.
  • Successfully communicates and collaborates with engineers and scientists throughout the design process.
  • Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.

  • Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications.
  • Converts multi-CAD system subassemblies (Creo, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, etc.) from the partner laboratories into integrated mechanical assemblies.
  • Be adaptable to receive and respond appropriately to direction and feedback
  • Takes complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build.
  • Works with the Document Control Center to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings.
  • Creates engineering models and drawings using computer-aided design (Creo) graphics workstation.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards
  • At least 5 years of experience using Creo CAD systems is required, or proven ability to learn new CAD system on the job in recent work
  • Associates degree in an engineering or science discipline and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience
  • A high school diploma may be considered with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • GD&T
    • Solid understanding of standards (ASME Y14.5)
    • How to apply these standards in your designs (models & drawings)
  • Previous hands-on experience with manufacturing processes and related tolerances
  • How to apply these standards in your designs (models & drawings)
  • Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Solid understanding of standards (ASME Y14.5)
  • Windchill experience
  • Top-down design, skeleton modeling techniques in Creo software
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.
