Job Description

TRI’s Carbon Neutrality Department within our Human-Centered AI (HCAI) Division blends behavioral science, human-computer interaction research, and machine learning to understand, predict and enable carbon-neutral behavior. We are looking for a Sr. Applied Behavioral Scientist to work collaboratively with product owners and leads across Toyota groups to craft products, policies, and strategies through our department’s research as well as through insights from behavioral science concepts and approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze experiments to test proposed interventions.
  • Conduct literature reviews to identify behavioral science concepts and apply them to business challenges.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with software engineers, product leaders, user experience researchers, and designers to evaluate current roadmaps, products, and strategies to find opportunities to apply behavioral science concepts and principles to improve products and processes.
  • Design interventions to incorporate behavioral science recommendations.
  • Co-define the vision and strategy for Applied Behavioral Science with the Carbon Neutrality Department and HCAI leadership.
  • Conduct exploratory analyses to identify areas of opportunity.
  • Collaborate with scientists in the Carbon Neutrality Department to shape our research program and to communicate research to Toyota partners.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Great teammate.
  • Strong data science skills with Proficiency in R and/or Python.
  • Experienced in other big data languages and tools (e.g. SQL, Hive, PySpark) is a plus.
  • Ability to lead multi-functional projects.
  • Strong interest and experience in applying behavioral science concepts and principles in partnership with product teams.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of statistics and data analysis common to the field of behavioral science
  • Broad knowledge of behavioral science concepts and theories.
  • Expertise in any of the following areas is a plus: intervention/behavior change, affective science, social psychology, consumer behavior.
  • Interest and capability to communicate, written and verbal, with collaborators unfamiliar with behavioral science.
  • Ph.D. in Psychology, Behavioral Economics or a related field.
  • Appetite to learn across functions.
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $184,000-$264,500 /year for California-based roles; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Note that TRI offers a generous benefits package (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave) and an annual cash bonus structure.
