The Role
As a Scientist in the Preformulation Group at Moderna, you will play a critical role in selecting lead clinical candidates. You will utilize your expertise in physico-chemical measurements and computational analysis tools to nominate the safest and most efficacious drug products. You will be responsible for characterizations spanning from solid-state drug components to higher-order structure in novel mRNA formulations using tools and perspectives from materials science, colloid structure, and chemical stability. The successful candidate will be curious in exploring new paths for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas, work collaboratively with multifunctional teams, and be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes. Through effective collaboration and clear scientific communication with all stakeholders, you will drive phase-appropriate advancement on aggressive CMC timelines.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Design controls, prepare samples, perform measurements, use software tools to reduce data, and communicate findings to advance and enhance the platform in a Discovery setting
Support technical innovation in Preformulation to successfully plan, execute, and bring to the next stage in pharmaceutical development novel mRNA nanoparticle formulations
Collaborate with internal scientific staff and maintain external partnerships for project success and timely results delivery
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
Ph.D. with0-2 years of work experience or a M.Sc. with 5+ years of experience in Preformulation, Biophysical characterization, or Early Pharmaceutical Development of small and large molecules, including biopolymers
Strong foundation in biochemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field
Excellent written and oral communication skills with a track record of achievement in publications, technical documents, regulatory filings, or patent applications.
Eagerness for continued growth and learning, contributing across cross-functional areas.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
Ability to characterize of particle size, morphology, and crystallinity of solid-state drug components using p ractical experience and theoretical knowledge of X-ray (XRD, SAXS) and thermodynamic (DSC, TGA, DVS, ITC) measurements
Expertise in cutting-edge hybrid spectro/microscopy techniques providing single particle or single molecule detail to vibrational or electronic spectra
