Job Description
Overview:
Bennett Aerospace, Inc. has an opening for a highly motivated Scientist I located at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida to support analytic or scientific studies in space horticulture and evaluation of experimental results; apply scientific principles in horticultural research and technology development. Member of an experiment or project team. Support various projects which may include growing and evaluating crop plants for space food production for life support systems in future spacecraft for space exploration missions. Apply scientific principles in research and technology development. Generally function in one or more of the following activities: literature review, experiment design and biological analysis.
Responsibilities:
Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safety - LASSO enforces a safety culture whereby all employees have the responsibility for continuously developing and maintaining a safe work environment. As appropriate, each employee is responsible for completing all training requirements and fulfilling all self-aid/buddy aid responsibilities, participating in emergency response tasks and serving on safety committees and teams.
  • Performs visual crop assessments and records findings
  • Quality - Quality is the foundation for the management of our business and the keystone to our goal of customer satisfaction.
  • Daily maintenance of plant experiments
  • Set-up and maintenance of drip irrigation and hydroponic systems (NFT/DWC)
  • Crop fertigation (mixing nutrients and monitoring pH)
  • Post-harvest physiology evaluation, harvest techniques and data collection of scientific plant material
  • Knowledge of various grow mediums (coco, soil, hemp etc.) and irrigation methods (hand watering, sub-irrigation, drip systems)
  • Each employee must read and understand his/her Quality Management and Customer Satisfaction responsibilities.
  • Ability to carry out crop-specific SOPs (propagation/planting, transplanting, harvesting and data collection)
  • Must have accountability, proactive behavior and strong attention to detail
  • Hands on experience with various equipment: quantum sensors, spectroradiometer, leaf porometers, photosynthetic gas exchange systems, leaf area meters, pH/EC meters
  • Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative team environment
  • Execution of experiments in controlled environment agriculture. Includes utilization, cleaning, and monitoring of environmental chamber
  • Procedure Compliance - Each employee must read, understand and implement the general and specific operational, safety, quality and environmental requirements of all plans, procedures and policies pertaining to his/her job.
Qualifications:
Education and Expereince Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, horticulture or plant science or related science field or equivalent experience
  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
  • US citizenship is required for unescorted access to assigned work area(s).
  • Must be able to successfully pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries.
  • Excellent communications and analytical skills
  • 0 to 5 years of job-related experience
  • Position may require travel.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs.
Security Requirements:
Security Clearance Level: Secret
  • Successful Pass of Bennett Aerospace Background Investigation, Drug Screening and Credit Check.
  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance.
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a Government background investigation and must meet eligibility and suitability requirements.
