Job Description

The Safety Manager is accountable and responsible for developing, implementing, and administering safety and health policies, programs, and training at Dole Packaged Foods facilities in McDonough, GA and Decatur, MI. Ensures compliance will all Company, Federal, and State safety and health regulations and standards by providing safety program direction to all stakeholders.


Program Management


  • Develops and coordinates EHS training plans for locations.
  • Implement accident investigation, data analysis, recurrence prevention programs and procedures, and ensure corrective actions are followed through.
  • Guide plant leadership through incident investigation/root cause analysis
  • Ensure all recordkeeping is timely and conforms to company mandates.
  • Maintain and record hazardous waste generation. Maintain hazardous waste manifests.
  • Manage and report sustainability-related metrics in alignment with the Dole Promise.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local legislation and codes governing environmental, health and safety for frozen manufacturing plants in the U.S. (Decatur MI, McDonough GA).
  • Oversee Emergency Response Plan
  • Audit Safety and Security Programs for compliance and effectiveness. Ensure all required onsite records and reports are complete, accurate and submitted per established procedures.
  • Respond and provide direction in all emergency situations.
  • Maintain SDS
  • Facilitate management safety meetings, reviewing injury statistics and corrective actions
  • Keep apprised of Federal and State Safety and Food Security regulations
  • Review and approve PPE
  • Conduct safety and environmental audits of all operating facilities including PHA, PSM and OSHA programs.
  • Provides job orientation to crew and contractors at jobsites.
  • Develop and manage department budget
  • Responsible for the implementation of all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Builds a proactive safety culture within facilities.
  • Monitor security operation, assess physical site security and advise management of deficiencies with recommendations
  • Work with key business partners to evaluate, develop and implement initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents/incidents.
  • Oversee Job Safety Analysis development
  • Maintain the Company’s environmental plan, environmental programs and all environmental permits in manner consistent with Federal, State, Local and Company guidelines. Responsible for submitting all permits and maintaining all environmental files in manner that is consistent with Federal, State, Local and Company guidelines.
  • Develop and deliver training that fit specific needs of both regulatory safety/security requirements in conjunction with Company Safety Programs
  • Functions as liaison with governmental inspectors, agencies, and regulators.


Experience, Knowledge, & Skills You Bring


  • Knowledge and experience with RMP/PSM regulations and compliance
  • Knowledge of Worker’s Compensation
  • Five (5) or more years related experience in Health & Safety or equivalent combination, food manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Forklift Train-the-Trainer Certification Preferred
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other applicable industry environmental, health and safety standards
  • Experience with ergonomics and industrial hygiene a plus
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or progress towards achieving certifications

Education & Certification


  • Bachelor’s Degree in industrial safety, industrial hygiene, safety engineering or related experience in the field preferred.
  • OSHA 30 Certification preferred


Physical Requirements


  • This position requires exposure to elements consistent with plant/manufacturing and the ability to work in cold, wet, or hot, dusty environments
  • Ability to occasionally reach with hands and arms, as well as walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb as well as lift, push and pull.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to sit and use the computer for extended periods of time; ability to answer phones and use a variety of office equipment; ability to lift 15 pounds and reach overhead.
  • Ability to walk the interior and exterior of facilities and have the ability to safely climb ladders, stairs, walk on uneven ground and work in area of cold temperature (35-40 degrees Fahrenheit)


Travel Requirements


  • Travel will be required between both facilities.
