Surgical Robotics Startup in the Greater LA Area : Robotics & Control Engineer


A new surgical robotics startup in the greater LA area is revolutionizing the world of surgical ophthalmology by developing a novel, AI driven, and imaging-guided surgical robotic system. Our aim is to expand access to care, provide superior capabilities to the human surgeon, and enhance patient outcomes. Microsurgery in general and Ophthalmology are subfields of surgery for which the surgical outcomes can be significantly improved by robotic systems to allow superior dexterity, precision, accuracy, and visualization beyond the human surgeon’s own capabilities.

As an Engineer you will bring your accumulated medical device product development experience. In this role, you will design components and systems (hardware and software) as part of a complete product subjected to FDA regulations. Your innovative and robust design will be subject to safety requirements and demonstrate efficacy to deliver a superior product to support the surgical community leading to outstanding outcomes for the patient.


General responsibilities of the engineer include:

  • Use a broad range of engineering tools (analytical and numerical modeling, analysis, prototyping, etc.) to create components and systems as part of a complete product solution.
  • Efficiently analyze problems and synthesize your experience and breadth of knowledge of engineering fundamentals to generate innovative ideas and design concepts that meet the business needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the development team to create product specifications in accordance with ISO 13485 to meet business requirements and assess risks; this may include, but is not limited to: product specifications, risk analysis, and verification test protocols.
  • Quickly understand novel technologies and engage with moving them forward towards a product.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship for junior team members.
  • Cooperate with and understand the design challenges being addressed by other project team members; help determine and drive toward solutions.
  • Adhere to and enhance the Quality Management System (QMS), including developing and maintaining documentation.
  • Lead effective design reviews and ensure that products are developed appropriately in a medically regulated environment.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project plans, setting and adhering to milestones, deliverables and budgets.


Robotics & Control Engineer (RC-TeleOp):

Education and Working Experience:

  • 5-10 years of electro-mechanical and low-level software for robotics products development experience, ideally with 3+ years in a regulated product development or medical device manufacturing environment.
  • Masters, or Ph.D. Degree in Mechanical / Electrical / Mechatronics / Computer Science / Robotics Engineering.

Deep Knowledge in

  • High-level and low-level communication protocols
  • Actuators and force/torque sensors
  • Teleoperation
  • Haptics
  • Kinematics, dynamics, and controls for serial and parallel mechanisms

Software Development Proficiency in

  • C/C++, Python
  • Is a plus: Rust, QNX
  • Realtime Linux

Hands-on Experience in

  • Designing, programming, and testing real time software for robotics systems
  • Designing, programming, and testing low-level code for controlling servo systems
  • Deriving Kinematics / Dynamics equations of serial and parallel mechanisms
