The Surgical Instruments & Supply Optimization (SISO) Clinical Nurse will provide clinical expertise on surgical instrument usage across the continuum of service lines and recommend opportunities to optimize and standardize surgical instrument and supply inventories. The role directly contributes to data acquisition, collaboration with a multidisciplinary project team, execution of project plans, and will directly engage with surgeon and nursing stakeholders to ensure clinical integrity while optimizing inventory. The role requires proficiency in surgical procedures across all service lines, the ability to work collaboratively, effective communication skills to influence and implement change, and data collection during surgical procedures. The position involves maintaining nursing licensure, integrating new clinical technologies and theories, and active bedside practice. This is a hybrid role, 3 days onsite, 2 remote.
Responsibilities:
Surgical Instruments & Supply Optimization:
- Participates in OR Cost Awareness (ORCA) along with ad hoc working groups to support the strategic alignment of department, hospital, and systems-based sterile processing functions and clinical workstreams.
- Serves as the coordinator for Service Line inventory reviews, working in close partnership with Customer Service and RN Manager colleagues to optimize space and availability of surgical instruments and supplies.
- Observes and documents used and unused surgical instrument sets and supplies during procedures for a wide range of surgical service lines; collects usage data for various procedures and surgeons. Identify opportunities for standardized data collection inside the OR.
- Serves as an ambassador for the Nursing Department on the SISO Project Team. Communicates instrument set changes to clinical groups involved.
- Assists in developing pre- and post-implementation surveys.
- Strictly adheres to project timelines, produces and distributes communication campaign materials, confirm instrument set contents were physically updated when received for use, and receives feedback from clinical groups.
- Communicates regularly with a multidisciplinary team and Project Manager on progress, critical factors, obstacles, and feedback received from clinical groups.
- Provides expert-level consultation to a multidisciplinary team focusing on high-priority reusable instrument and disposable supply inventory optimization efforts. Serves as the content expert on clinical uses of surgical instrumentation and supply, and imparts knowledge of appropriate instrument substitutions.
- Assists the team in identifying barriers to implementing improvement plans and developing strategies to overcome these barriers.
Nursing Practice:
- Demonstrates accountability for ongoing personal/professional development. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current nursing and healthcare practices.
- Identifies learning needs and goals, and designs a plan to meet them. Participates in activities that foster peer support and networking.
- Provide direct patient care as applicable. Initiates, facilitates, coordinates, and manages interdisciplinary collaboration for the purpose of providing direct care to the patient.
- Identifies and recommends interventions regarding ethical issues in patient care and guides staff and other providers in the application of ethical concepts to address issues.
- Applies new technology, nursing theories, research findings, and experiential knowledge to improve patient/family healthcare outcomes and to assist in the development of nursing practice as applicable.
Maintains a regular, monthly practice rotation and provides case coverage as needed
Education and Experience:
- Valid MA Nursing License
- 5 years in a OR Nursing role, with demonstrated advanced knowledge in surgical procedures and instrument uses across service lines.
- Master of Nursing preferred, Bachelor’s Degree required.
