WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Restoration Associate Crew Member will be part of a 3-person crew that helps maintain preserves in areas that are remote and off limits to the public or preserves that are frequented by the visiting public and performs land management activities. They manage natural resources, removes invasive/exotic species using mechanical and/or chemical methods, and conducts species monitoring. They may assist in prescribed burns and operate/maintain tools and equipment. They will use GPS and geographic information systems (GIS) to identify, record and map non-native, invasive species. The applicant will use and maintain equipment, power tools, vehicles, trailers, and GPS units. The successful applicant will be able to navigate natural areas with map and compass. The Restoration Associate crew member will maintain preserve records using a database on a Windows PC.


This position requires frequent travel throughout Michigan. Housing is available and travel accommodations will be provided by The Nature Conservancy. When traveling to maintain preserves in the upper peninsula, this person may be required to camp during the work week. This is a full time, temporary position, starting as soon as possible with a duration of 12 months. The compensation range for this position begins at $17.00 per hour, commensurate with skills and experience.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience using herbicides for land management activities.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with ARC GIS and GPS units.
  • 1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
  • NWCG Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualified or ability to pass fire training courses and fitness test. Must provide copy of certificate indicating completion of S-130, S-190, L-180, IS-100 and IS-700 if currently qualified.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.; brush cutter, herbicide sprayers, lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, trailer, two-way radio, etc.).
  • Ability to recognize native and non-native plants and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
  • Experience and ability to perform physical work, often under adverse weather conditions for long periods of time.
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
