Job Description
SAFE Alliance seeks two full-time Residential Counselors for our Community Shelter and Family Shelter locations. The Residential Counselor will provide trauma informed, strengths based individual, group, and family counseling to adult and child survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. This is a nontraditional counselor role in that the counselor is part of the shelter leadership team who is responsible for ensuring we have a safe and healthy environment for the shelter clients.

About this position:


  • We need two people to fill the role of a full-time, exempt Residential Counselor; one will work out of the Community Shelter and one will work out of the Family Shelter location and will serve as back up to each location. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday 9am-5pm but may work an evening or weekend depending on client needs. We will pay you an annual salary starting at $57,000 to $60,000 dependent upon experience. Applicants who are bilingual in the English and Spanish Languages are eligible for an annual language differential of $3,600. This position will require travel and will provide face to face services to our survivors in a building where survivors live. Please indicate in your cover letter which location you would prefer to work from; Community Shelter or Family Shelter.


Key Duties:


  • Meets with clients in person providing client focused intake, assessment, crisis intervention and ongoing counseling for adults, children, families and groups.
  • Provide information and context to team members during staffing regarding possible needs for clients who have higher needs and require additional support in shelter.
  • As part of the shelter leadership team, the counselor will be on the on-call team providing supports and services after hours to teams. The position is expected to help cover the front desk during off hours as needed since shelter is a 24/7 program that needs to be staffed 24 hours/day, 365 days/year).
  • Providing clients with referrals for community resources, mental health services & follow-up counseling.
  • Able to identify, develop and implement creative ideas for counseling that engages clients in the program.
  • Will develop relationships with internal programs as well as external program resources to provide the best-case coordination as possible.
  • Maintain current and accurate records on shelter residents, including regular recording and maintenance of client records.
  • Attend weekly team meetings, staffing and case management meetings.
  • Provide information to clients on various issues including legal, criminal justice, and advocacy and will testify in court when appropriate.
  • Work with the resident advisors, shelter advocates and shelter managers to address client crisis in shelter and provide same day support/triage when needed.
  • Will work on a multi-disciplinary team providing therapeutic insight into goal planning and staffing sessions for clients.


Qualifications:

  • Experience establishing rapport, trust and boundaries with clients.
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience with trauma, homelessness and/or domestic violence/sexual assault service delivery; knowledge of human development, family systems, and appropriate therapy modalities for sexual and domestic violence survivors and their families.
  • All employees are required to comply with policies regarding COVID-19, which may be subject to change. COVID vaccines are still highly recommended, and we encourage employees to get vaccinated if they are able.
  • Licensed to provide mental health treatment in the state of Texas. Intern or associate-level applicants must procure their own board-approved supervisor outside of the agency. We will provide program supervision.
  • Have an understanding of assessment tools, trauma informed services and group dynamics.
  • Must have a valid, State of Texas Driver’s License, and at least three (3) consecutive years of driving experience OR one (1) year of driving experience if over 27 years of age; AND an acceptable driving record; AND if in possession of an out-of-state license, obtain a State of Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of beginning employment.
  • Possess a master’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field is required.
  • Abel to be compassionate and sensitive to client needs.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (including an FBI fingerprint check), as well a pre-employment drug screen and TB test (if applicable).
  • Training/Experience in EMDR preferred.
  • Experience in working with varied ethnic groups and demonstrated cultural competence.
  • Experience and skilled in data entry/collection using online database to track program data.
  • Experience working in a high stress, fast-paced environment while maintaining a friendly, approachable, calm and professional demeanor.
