Occ Summary

A lab in the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center (DBTC) under the Department of Neurosurgery is looking for a Research Technician II. The DBTC has a singular, all-encompassing goal: to develop novel, safe, and effective immune-based therapies for patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.

This candidate will work with a highly collaborative team of researchers and clinicians to study the immune system and the impact of immunotherapy treatment in primary and metastatic CNS malignancies. The lab focuses on translating novel therapies into the clinic, and re-purposing existing therapies for the treatment of brain cancer. This involves collecting tumor tissue taken at the time of surgery, processing it for analysis and measuring biomarkers of immune response.

Our preclinical and clinical projects are spearheaded by an outstanding complement of graduate students, medical students, research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and junior and senior scientists assembled under the umbrella of the Duke Brain Tumor Center.

Immunotherapeutic approaches include dendritic cell vaccines, peptide vaccines, protein vaccines, biologics such as antibodies, bispecific antibodies, oncolytic viruses, recombinant chemokines/cytokines T cell based and other cellular therapies. These immunotherapeutic strategies are to be evaluated in immunocompetent and immunocompromised preclinical models.

This position may involve basic and translational research focused on glioma and microenvironment cell state, immune interactions and how these change during glioma evolution, interface with response and resistance to immunotherapy. We have a hybrid dry and wet lab allowing us to generate and analyze data from emerging technologies including single cell genomics/proteomics to better answer our biologically driven questions.

Candidates will be encouraged to pursue studies on glioma and glioma microenvironment, or to shape their own projects. We will provide tailored training using the trial and omics and the datasets and tools that are available to the lab. We have a broad collaborative network, both institutionally as well as externally. Our institution is well equipped with cutting edge technology. Combined, we offer a supportive environment that is highly conducive to effectively working towards a great future.

Clinical Duties:

  • Maintain database and specimen inventory systems for stored tissue and other bio-specimens.
  • Coordinate with medical team (OR and Pathology) to identify and collect patient samples.
  • Process patient specimens or coordinate transfer to third party after receiving from medical team (tissue, blood, etc).
  • Learn clinical patient software to identify patient surgeries relevant to the research project and to extract demographics.

Research Duties:

  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare and execute work independently, with minimal input from supervisor or principal investigator.
  • Document, compile conclusions from experimental results.
  • Interface and coordinate with other groups, cores, and shared resources across campus to facilitate specimen processing and testing.
  • Ship specimens to internal and external collaborators.
  • Perform other related duties as required by supervisor.
  • Review laboratory methods, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to the research experiments.
  • Operate laboratory equipment required for specific tests and sample processing.

Education and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, or related field.
  • Detailed documentation skills.
  • Experience with coding, R studio, python and perl is a plus.
  • A background working within a clinical team (nurses, doctors, etc) is a plus.
  • Experience with aseptic technique is a plus.
  • Must be detail-oriented, well organized, and have strong communication skills.
