Job Summary

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.


The CSIS Global Health Policy Center (GHPC) works with diverse stakeholders to make U.S. global health efforts more strategic, integrated, and sustainable, as well as to raise awareness of global health and its importance to U.S. national security. The key focus areas include global health security, women’s and children’s health, nutrition and food security, the sustainability of U.S. bilateral and multilateral global health initiatives, and the burden of infectious diseases.


CSIS GHPC seeks a highly motivated Research Associate to support its pandemic preparedness and response portfolio. This position will support GHPC in executing pandemic preparedness and response -focused activities and play a key role in advancing GHPC’s major initiatives. S/he also will support the research and organizational work of the Director and Associate Fellow and engage regularly with the GHPC Executive Director and other staff.


The ideal candidate will have an educational and/or professional background in global health/health and some experience in project management. S/he should be able to work concurrently on multiple activities and projects and be adaptive and reflexive to changing operational needs. S/he must be able to multi-task, seek clarification and guidance as appropriate, prioritize competing demands, and effectively communicate. The Research Associate will support the execution of several high-profile activities; help plan and implement virtual and in-person events; and provide research support for policy commentaries and analyses. In addition, the Research Associate will provide administrative support to the Director and coordinate daily with other GHPC staff, associates, interns, and external consultants.


The minimum salary for this position is $59,000.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:


I. Research, Writing and Project Management Support for the pandemic preparedness and response portfolio (80%), such as:


  • Support research projects by contributing to writing, thought pieces, and multimedia products
  • Ongoing task management, including coordination of deliverables
  • Compiling research, drafting background briefers, and preparing talking points
  • Coordinating organization and logistics of pandemic preparedness and response-related meetings, conferences, events, travel, and other logistics as assigned, including (but not limited to):


 Planning and executing event logistics


 Drafting correspondence


 Coordinating RSVP tracking


 Developing background and preparatory memos


 Communicating verbally or in writing with CSIS and external partners


  • Backstopping the staff on other pandemic prepared ness and response-related activities
  • Other substantive activities and tasks as assigned by the Director, Associate Fellow, and/or Executive Director
  • Assists with maintaining pandemic preparedness and response workstream budgets and the grant proposal process


II. Other Office Administrative and Management Duties (20%), potentially including but not limited to:


  • Coordinate intern activity in collaboration with staff
  • Compose, review and release program related social media content via Twitter and Pardot
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director, Associate Fellow, and/or staff
  • Backstopping GHPC staff on coordination of events and research trips as needed
  • Managing the Director’s schedule and meeting requests
  • Backstopping or supporting other team members in the planning, execution, and organization of non-pandemic preparedness and response events and meetings


Knowledge, Education, And Experience


  • Must have demonstrated, strong knowledge of and interest in global health security issues, policies, programs, stakeholders, and/or multilateral coordination platforms, particularly U.S. investments
  • Experience with social media in a professional setting desired
  • Must possess a self-starting, entrepreneurial mind-set and be able to work well independently and in teams
  • Preferred minimum 3-5 years related educational and/or professional experience in global health policy and/or program/project management
  • PC literate, specifically MS Office, and familiarity with web-based research tools
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must have demonstrated, strong research and writing skills
  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public, including senior-level representatives of the U.S. Government, international organizations, foreign governments, and Members of Congress
  • Candidate should possess sound judgment and impeccable integrity, positive attitude, and creative outlook
  • Bachelor’s degree in Global Health, International Relations, International Development, Public Policy/Administration, or related field
  • Ability to operate under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
