Job Description

Position Purpose
To oversee the newly constructed aquatics facility, by independently providing care of zebrafish in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and policies on the use of laboratory animals in the conduct of biomedical research. To perform daily feeding and maintenance tasks, troubleshooting and solving any problems that may arise. To provide support to research investigations and provide leadership and training to other technical staff and laboratory members. When appropriate, to assist in experiments to recover lines, genotype, and generate transgenic animals by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques in support of research studies directed at understanding zebrafish neural development and behavior.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules if needed.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Responsible and reliable.
  • Ability to work independently with good judgment.
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying equipment or tanks weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Adept at troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Ability to follow and apply procedures for the care and handling of laboratory animals.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as hazardous chemicals.
  • Three years’ relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Ability to instruct and mentor other users of the facility.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology preferred.
  • Some relevant laboratory or science experience.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Facility/Habitat Maintenance
  • Independently oversees maintenance and repairs (contacts appropriate vendors for guidance and ensures that repairs occur in a timely way).
  • Decontaminates areas (sinks, bench tops, microscopes) as needed.
  • Cleans tanks and system components, nets and mating tanks, utilizing a washer or other approved methods.
  • Updates daily log of system parameters (e.g., pH, temperature, conductivity, light:dark cycles) and equipment maintenance logs Performs light maintenance of the facilities such as replacement of particle filters, UV bulbs, preventive maintenance of washers; emptying waste baskets and floor cleaning.
  • Has complete knowledge of all aspects of the recirculating water and filtration systems, monitors water quality daily and adjusts parameters as needed to fish life support units.
  • Manager of the fish facility. Responsible for effective operations and trouble-shooting problems.
  • Interfaces with building management and outside vendors to arrange for regular maintenance and/or repairs.

Animal Care
  • Prepares embryos for shipping to other laboratories.
  • Maintains shared wild-type lines and some genetic and transgenic lines.
  • Collaborates with Technologist/Veterinarian in designing a treatment plan, implements plan, and evaluates its effectiveness.
  • Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.
  • Sets up matings, collects and sorts embryos, and monitors the growth and survival of larvae and juveniles.
  • Euthanizes animals as needed.
  • Handles and cares for zebrafish lines on a daily basis following established operating procedures.
  • Assesses and reports changes in condition of animals.
  • Communicates with the principal investigators and their technical staff concerning the status of their research animals.

  • Keeps zebrafish facility well-equipped by monitoring use of consumable supplies and non-consumable equipment. Orders food, filters, nets and other consumables as needed.
  • Has mastery of zebrafish inventory database, updates records and performs routine tank walks to confirm accuracy.
  • Receives and properly stores food and supplies.

Research Support
  • Maintains laboratory notebook/data sheets to record tasks performed.
  • Orders all laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance; obtains maintenance and repair as necessary.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Ensures adherence to IACUC protocol and provides reports and updates for IACUC reporting.
  • Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
  • Provides general technical assistance in support of the research team.
  • Time-permitting, assists in laboratory experiments/tests, utilizing a range of established methods, procedures, and techniques (e.g., PCR genotyping, RNA injections into embryos, fluorescence microscopy).

  • Instructs all users of the aquatics facility on correct practices, and provides feedback on errors or non-compliance.
  • Serves as a team leader for zebrafish facility and/or on weekends.
