Job Description
Overview:
The Global and Community Health Registered Nurse (GCHRN) provides patient care to University students as well as operational support to the Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants in Outpatient Medical Services, with a special focus on the services provided by the Global and Community Health (G+CH) Team. The GCHRN reports to the Director of Nursing and works closely with the G+CH Physician Coordinator and Travel & Immunization APN to provide for the immunization and travel health needs of incoming, Bridge Year, and current students on campus and abroad. The G+CH Physician Coordinator provides direct supervision for the G+CH related tasks. The successful candidate for this position should exhibit excellent communication skills, be open to seasonal flexibility of responsibilities when there are anticipated GCH-related surges. The successful candidate should have interest in quality improvement and be committed to evidence-based care for young adults in a college health setting.

This is a full time, 12-month, bi-weekly paid position. Daily work schedule will be Mon-Fri: 8:45am-5pm. Some weekends will be required during peak immunization and travel seasons throughout the academic year, with weekday schedule adjustment. Vacation time will have some minimal restrictions secondary to periods of high volume work.
This position may be deemed “essential” as defined by University and UHS policy.
Responsibilities:
Immunization Compliance: (30%)
  • In collaboration with G+CH MD and Travel and Immunization (T&I) APN:
1. Reviews incomplete immunization records for matriculating graduate and undergraduate students, tracks immunization compliance at critical times throughout the school year, and communicates with students who are at risk for non-compliance due to incomplete immunizations.
2. Participates in the quality assurance of the immunization compliance data, runs reports to troubleshoot erroneous entries and assists the T&I APN with the annual state report as needed.
3. Collaborates with UHS-IT for updates and upgrades of the Medicat Immunization Compliance module, is responsible for training new and temporary staff members to data entry and immunization verification as needed in this module.
4. Updates the Vaccine Chapter of the Medicat data manual as needed.
5. Has regular meetings with T&I APN to assure continued collaboration-consulting with the GC-H physician as directed
6. -Administers immunizations during immunization appointment surges under standing orders (in the late summer and fall) to bring students to compliance.

Travel and Global Health: (30%)
  • Under the supervision of G+CH physician and Travel/Immunization APN:
1. Reviews medical records of students traveling abroad and sends personalized and travel health recommendations via email to students for whom an in person travel health visit is not needed.
2. Monitors Travel Health outlook mailbox and answers emails as needed.
3. Acts as a prescribing agent for G+CH physician, T&I APN, and other travel health providers who are independently licensed for travel related prescription medications under standing orders.
4. Assists G+CH physician in reviewing medical forms and test results for incoming Bridge Year (BY) students and monitors BY students' immunization entries to ensure compliance with NJ State and BY program immunization requirements and communicates with BY program to issue reminders in a timely manner.
5. Charts Bridge Year medical incidents in the Electronic Health Record.

Vaccine Inventory: (15%)
  • In direct collaboration with G+CH MD and T&I APN,
1. -Assists T&I APN to ensure quality standards for vaccine storage. Understands CDC storage and security recommendations for vaccines and ensures quality standards are met.
2. Participates in the notification process Minus80 and responds as needed according to the procedures outlined.
3. Participates in regular physical counting and follow up of vaccine inventory, reporting discrepancies to T&I and GC-H MD immediately.
3. Participates in the ordering and receiving of vaccine inventory as needed.

Administrative Management (10%)
  • Organizes the ordering, distribution, and utilization of POCT supplies
  • Oversees and Coordinates POCT with the Director of Nursing and/or Lead OPMS Nurse
  • Oversees external testing of reference samples
  • Maintains POCT competency for all clinical staff
  • Is responsible for maintenance and organization of POCT labs

Direct Patient Care: (10%)
  • Periodically provides care to students within the Urgent Care service line within Outpatient Medical Services
  • Provides independent nurse appointments for students not requiring a provider visit and elevates to a provider as needed.
  • Administers travel health and compliance immunizations during peak travel/compliance times.
  • Works in a dyadic relationship with the client service representatives to rapidly triage/assess need, and guide students and staff presenting to UHS to the appropriate resource (Telehealth/immediate appt/future appt/nursing visit only/OCC health/primary care outside of UHS.).
  • Evaluates patients with urgent complaints and monitors the patient until a disposition or medical evaluation occurs.
  • Maintains operational effectiveness of the outpatient clinic by evaluating patients managing departmental patient flow and providing nursing support for physicians and advanced practice clinicians.

Infection Prevention & Control (5%)
  • Monitors communityhealth@ email account and craft templated responses in consultation with G+CH physician or designee
  • Access the Outbreak Management Tool and tabulates reports on campus outbreaks as needed
  • Member of the Infection Prevention & Control Committee
  • Assists G+CH physician with maintaining database of students vulnerable to infectious diseases and with communicating recommendations for enhanced protection against infectious diseases in working and living environments.
Qualifications:
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Demonstrates curiosity and open mindset regarding those of different identities and cultures
  • Ability to independently perform physical assessments
  • 3-5 years of nursing experience in an acute care or primary care office setting
  • Required technical skills: full Microsoft Office suite, including Teams and Sharepoint (or the willingness and technological capability to learn)
  • Triage experience
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies, including the ability to obtain intravenous access and administer medications for anaphylaxis
  • Attends to the cultures and identities of others and adapts work style as needed
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize and effectively manage diverse tasks, often with interruptions
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to maintain during periods of schedule flexibility
  • Articulates an authentic commitment to inclusion.
  • Is not judgmental about differences and able to acknowledge mistakes, making amends when necessary
  • Vaccine knowledge, knowledge of vaccine procedures and adverse reactions, or willingness to learn
  • NJ license as a registered nurse
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN)

PREFERRED SKILLS:
Travel Health certificate from International Society for Travel Medicine or willingness to acquire
  • Working knowledge of the CDC's "Health Information for Travelers" ("Yellow Book")
  • Preferred technical skills: Medicat EHR, Teams, Outlook, excel
  • Training in health equity and other diversity and inclusion topics
  • Good working knowledge of world geography and global health trends
  • Primary care experience with immunization management responsibilities
  • Masters degree in nursing or other related field
  • Working knowledge of the CDC's "Vaccine Information Statements"
