Job Description
Job Summary:
Provides Mammography imaging procedures within scope of practice, including receiving and preparing patients and equipment for procedures and maintaining supplies for the Mammography department. Produces high quality images by following protocols set forth by the radiology department. Operates all mammography equipment in a safe and proficient manner within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Works with students from approved educational institutions.

Job Duties:
Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act. Practices only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Provides health services of scope, quality, and quantity consistent with Cherokee Nation policies. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with patient and patient care team members. Perform diagnostic or screening mammograms as ordered. Perform 3D Tomosynthesis mammography as ordered where applicable. Prepares for and assists the Radiologist in completion of intricate mammography examinations which may include but not limited to breast biopsies, needle localizations, contrast enhance mammography exams. Maintains working knowledge of American College of Radiology (ACR) mammography guidelines and requirements. Maintains working knowledge of Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) guidelines and requirements. Responsible for performing and maintaining mammography Quality Control and Quality Control records. Assists in compilation and maintenance of mammography statistical data. Follows infection control and safety guidelines. Uses professional and ethical judgment and critical thinking when performing duties. Performs all duties using proper body mechanics. Ensures completion of all duties, accurately demonstrates human anatomy, pathology, and medical terminology, uses proper mammography techniques, annotation, anatomical and pathological demonstration, and corrects any errors. Maintains working knowledge of all mammography equipment used in the department including protocols and procedures. Enters data accurately into the computer systems and ensures completeness of patient paperwork. Demonstrates flexibility to the demands of patient care by coming in early and/or staying late. Practices responsible use of communication tools (paging system, telephones, email, fax, etc.), corrects problems as they arise and notifies supervisor/manager when assistance is required to do so. Interprets orders such as patient requisition, including special instructions. Ensures the patient is imaged in a safe environment, free of hazards and identifies patients with approved identifiers. Provides full attention to the patient and the procedure, addressing and handling patient care concerns, and seeking opportunities to assist in overall patient care activities. Provides any life support measures needed. Images patients utilizing approved protocols/procedures, sterile or aseptic technique where applicable, and brings questions forward before imaging patients. Protects patients by following “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA) safety guidelines. Exhibits professional and courteous customer service at all times and demonstrates knowledge of Age Specific Criteria in carrying out work duties and tasks. Recognizes examination findings that may require immediate clinical response and notifies the interpreting radiologist (i.e. requesting a Stat Read). Discusses with the radiologist mammography findings and uses cognitive skills to identify, record and adapt procedures based on diagnostic information received. Recognizes patient distress signs, initiates and follows emergency procedures. Maintains current required licensure and certifications and follows division and department specific policies, procedures guidelines and protocols. Demonstrates adherence to accreditation standards, ethics, initiatives and applicable state/federal licensure and guidelines. Satisfies department in-services and continuing education requirements for the institution and section. Attends mandatory in-services, maintains expectations for safety preparedness including but not limited to: Orientation to new equipment, Employee Education Event, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, etc. and must document incidents, variances, unusual circumstances or patient’s concerns during the procedure and notifies the radiologist or supervisor as needed. Attends, contributes and participates in regularly scheduled departmental meetings. Assures all necessary patient documentation is complete and accurate by clearly writing required information on all necessary forms. Participates in quality and performance improvement activities, identifies new ways to improve workflow and patient experience. Manages patient flow effectively and minimizes delays by utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate simple cause and effect outcomes. Takes appropriate action to categorize problems into high to low priority levels and exercises appropriate action(s) to maintain efficiencies. Coordinates patient flow through the department by maximizing resource allocation and communicating any problems to the supervisor(s). Complies with all Cherokee Nation Health Service policies and procedures to maintain equipment safety. Relays all equipment malfunctions to the appropriate team and supervisor with appropriate information readily available. During system failure, performs department down time procedures and immediately reports failure to supervisor. Maintains his/her presence in the area and provides needed support to maximize department productivity. Follows exams from start to finish through complete system to ensure exams reach archive/interpreting radiologist site. Manages communications throughout the area, understands and participates in the importance of interrelationships between own unit’s employees and customer (Providers, Nursing, Patients) and how various teams as a whole contribute to the success of the facility. Exhibits and maintains a high level of customer service and is respectful and professional at all times with staff, both internal and external to Cherokee Nation. Listens when approached by others. Takes actions based on understanding of the message and asks appropriate questions to clarify if clarification is needed. Reports monthly procedure totals to supervisor/director as directed. Participates in on-going learning activities and demonstrates application of it in his/her role. Actively seeks opportunity to develop professionally and personally. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and establishes and maintains a high level of professionalism through cooperation, receptiveness and sensitivity to others. Demonstrates by example, a high-level customer service philosophy, ethical behavior and institutional core values. Understands and promotes team participation over individual contributions. Ensures appropriate inventory and supplies are available throughout each day/week for procedures. Retrieve images needed from the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR). Works with students from approved educational institutions rotating through Cherokee Nation Radiology Department for a learning experience in a clinical setting. Maintains verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal, tribal and/or state regulations. Maintains the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or required by law or court order. Compiles with the applicable state, tribal and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record created, maintained, transferred, or destroyed, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Associate's degree from 2-year college or technical school; or two years (60 credit hours) coursework from 4-year college or university; or three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS.
At least six months experience in a related field.

COMPUTER SKILLS
An individual should have knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Inventory software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must be currently certified in Radiography and Mammography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R) (M). Must obtain BLS and maintain during employment. Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).


Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; risk of radiation and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
