Job Description
The MGH Institute of Health Professions is seeking a Reference Librarian for Instruction.


The Reference Librarian for Instruction plays a vital role in the Bellack Library, a bustling academic health sciences library. With the guidance of the Library Director, this librarian works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve institutional goals and promote a supportive and inclusive campus environment through anti-racism and anti-oppression initiatives. In this small library setting, the Reference Librarian is involved in a variety of library functions, including information services and coordination of information literacy activities and materials. They work both independently and with others to draft, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures related to these areas.


The Bellack Library is committed to creating a welcoming and user-friendly space for all, both in person and online. As such, the Reference Librarian is responsible for evaluating services with an eye towards meeting the needs of a diverse population, particularly in the area of student engagement. The Reference Librarian also plays an important role in ensuring equitable service to all students, faculty, and staff, and actively contributes to the MGH Institute of Health Profession’s efforts to cultivate a diverse and inclusive campus community.


Overall, the Reference Librarian for Instruction is a valuable member of the Bellack Library team, working with dedication and commitment to support the academic and research needs of the MGH Institute of Health Professions.


Duties & Responsibilities


  • Information Literacy and Instruction Coordination (45%)
  • Creates research guides, video tutorials and other learning objects to facilitate asynchronous library instruction.
  • Manages the maintenance of instructional materials, including LibGuides, video tutorials and orientations, online workshops, and shared instructional materials
  • Takes the lead on oversight of Bellack’s information literacy activities, including tracking statistics and identifying new opportunities to support information literacy.
  • Professional Development and Service (5%)
  • Technical and Access Services (5%)
  • Stays current and expands professional knowledge in skills via participation in continuing education courses, professional associations, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Circulates materials to users.
  • Research, Instruction and Information Services (45%)
  • Coordinates evaluation of instructional activities and materials
  • Collaborates with faculty to embed customized library instruction in courses and to select library materials for coursework, including providing guidance with copyright/permissions issues.
  • Collaborates with library staff to maintain collections.
  • Supports student and faculty scholarship by providing instruction and guidance in the use of library tools, developing literature reviews, principles of evidence-based practice, the research process, health information literacy, and other topics as necessary through different modes including workshops, individual and small group research consultations, and reference services, any of which could be in-person or online depending on student/faculty needs.


Communicates actively with fellow professionals through regional and national conference attendance, research, publishing, and presentations.


Work Schedule


  • The opportunity to work remotely two (2) days per week.

EDUCATION


  • Master of Library Science (or similar) from an ALA accredited program
  • Experience developing and providing information literacy workshops and tutorials
  • 3-5 years’ experience providing information services in an academic library


Preferred


  • Health sciences library experience
  • Experience assessing library services and/or programming


Skills/ Abilities


  • Balance several responsibilities simultaneously

  • Excellent Database and Internet searching
  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills
  • Verbally engage with faculty and students in a variety of ways.
  • Travel between building floors and to other MGH locations
  • Familiarity with graphic design applications such as Canva or Adobe InDesign
  • Travel to the Institute campus in Charlestown
  • Moderate knowledge of website programming languages
  • Technical Skills-
  • Collaboration skills and ability work with various departments and individuals within the Institute
  • Sit in front of a computer for long periods of time
  • Physical Capabilities –
  • Effectively manage projects and meet deadlines
  • Work independently and in a team
  • Lift and move library materials (up to 30 lbs)
