Job Description
Position Summary: NYCDS seeks to hire a Reentry Advocate to support the Reentry Unit with matters pertaining to client welfare both while incarcerated in prison and upon returning home from any period of incarceration. The Reentry Advocate will help improve conditions of confinement for clients incarcerated upstate and will actively maintain a comprehensive database of reentry resources in the New York City area. 


  


Job responsibilities include but are not limited to: 


  • Communicating with family members of clients 
  • Conduct wellness checks with clients in upstate prisons 
  • Address issues around programming and disciplinary infractions in upstate prisons 
  • Respond to attorneys’ questions regarding upstate matters 
  • Resolve issues leftover from legal case (surcharges, time calculations, warrants, etc) 
  • Conduct research on reentry resources in NYC area and maintain database of those resources, updating as needed 
  • Request records (medical, mental health, programming, disciplinary, etc) 
  • Assist with reentry tasks as needed  
  • Requesting documents (sentencing minutes, archived legal files, parole documents, etc) 
  • Address issues of confinement related to health, safety, and wellness concerns in upstate prisons 


  


Qualifications and Skills of Ideal Candidate: 


  


Required: 


  • Relevant experience in justice reform or a related field, including but not limited to reentry support, social work, community organizing, policy reform, case management, ethnic studies, or communications. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial inequity and other social inequities within our legal system 


  


Preferred: 


  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • Strong organizational/time-management skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and advocacy skills 
  • Proficiency in MS Office (especially MS Word and MS Excel) 
  • Exceptional attention to detail and problem-solving skills 
  • Familiarity with the impact of legal system involvement on marginalized communities
