Job Specific Position Duties:
The duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs diagnostic X-rays, pre- and post-operative views involving facial fractures, sinus cavities of the face (maxillary, sphenoid, and ethmoid), prostheses and bone loss due to periodontal disease. Performs all Cone Beam CT scans to include small, medium and large fields of view (volume sizes). Responsible for properly arriving, printing radiology worksheet, departing the patient in Composite Health Care System (CHCS) and transfer of the scan to the medical Picture Archival Communication Systems (PACS) for review by the radiologist and responsible for the Quality Control Assessment of the Cone Beam CT and approval prior to release of the patient and transfer of the scan. Operates automatic rapid x-ray film processor (X-omat) and Panorex machine (based on the principle of curved surface laminography). Reports needed repairs to government supervisor in order to maintain equipment in proper working condition.
  • May assists in the training of student dental assistants and students from other facilities assigned to Unit but is not responsible for the clinical direction of the personnel or unit, however, not legally allowed to conduct formal evaluations on military or General Schedule (GS) employees. Demonstrates and instructs dental radiology equipment, methods, and procedures.
  • Performs a variety of moderately complex diagnostic radiographic procedures. Performs techniques such as periapical films, maxillary and mandibular occlusals, bite wings, Dautry views, Wineberg apparatus; and extraoral views such as lateral obliques, posterior-anterior mandibles, sub-mental vertex, Waters View, Townes projection, and zygomatic arch views (Jug Handle). Employs such techniques as lateral cephalometric view, lateral skull, lateral mandibles temporamandibular joint studies (TMJ), sialograms (involving contrast media), and special localization films of foreign bodies of the eye, hand and foot. Takes all required eye films, for the purpose of locating foreign bodies such as glass, shrapnel, etc. Takes all finger X-rays. Operates cephalometric X-ray unit, which is used to take profile roentgenogram, for use in maxillofacial rehabilitation, orthodontia, pre- and post-operative sliding osteotomies, orthodontic surgery cases, and fixed prosthodontia cases.

Additional Knowledge Required:
  • Knowledge of radiographic equipment, including Cone Beam CT, to ascertain if malfunction or safety hazard is present and to insure proper maintenance.
  • Knowledge of moderately complex radiographic procedures of the eye, skull, hand, foot, and facial features sufficient to perform such procedures.

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology such as the structure, location, and function of major organs and the skeletal system in order to locate areas of
study by using anatomical landmarks, to identify organs appearing on the film in order to determine the acceptability of the radiograph for diagnostic use,
and to determine if standard positioning techniques might cause further pain or injury to patients.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection agency standards including radiation sensitive areas of the body and all protective devices and methods appropriate to the equipment and procedures used, in order to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained for patients and self and to reassure patients who may be unfamiliar X-ray safety procedures.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate from an academic program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
  • Licensure: Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)
  • Experience: One year of experience as a Radiology / X-Ray Tech
  • Security: Must be able to pass a Government background check and obtain a Government security clearance.
  • Life Support Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS)
