This position performs radiation therapy and radiographic procedures involving the application of X-rays and radioactive substances to patients. The incumbent operates specialized X-ray equipment as prescribed by the physician, keeps treatment records and prepares operational reports as required. This position is responsible for providing direct patient care and also applies ionizing radiation to patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tumor localization using image guidance modalities.
  • Performs weekly checks of the patient's electronic chart for completeness and accuracy.
  • Performs service recovery as needed.
  • Performs daily quality and safety checks of the Linear Accelerator and other treatment equipment.
  • Photographs patients in the treatment position and observes patients for unusual skin reactions and side effects of treatment.
  • Explains treatment procedures to patients.
  • Teaches clinical intern students.
  • Maintains supplies and custom treat devices in the treatment room.
  • Schedules patients for treatment on treatment machines.
  • Checks daily treatment parameters; delivers the prescribed dosage; and maintains treatment records in the patient's electronic medical chart.
  • Prepares the treatment room and equipment, transfers patients to treatment area, and positions patients for treatment.
  • Performs radiation therapy treatments.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills.
  • Ability to perform verification checks and apply quality assurance procedures to ensure accuracy of dose calculations.
  • Ability to review and understand a treatment plan to accurately treat patients.
  • Ability to follow department policies, procedures and checklists to ensure safe, accurate treatments.
  • Ability to bill correctly for procedures performed.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.
  • The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life-span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Qualifications

Qualifications Licenses Required

  • Current licensure to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • Credentialed in Radiation Therapy Technology by the American Registry of Radiology (ARRT).
