Job Description

Requirements
The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), approved by the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) and NRC, is the individual required to be named on the NRC License as responsible for providing direction, implementation and management of the University's Broad Scope Radiation Safety (RS) program. Serves as the technical expert and member of the RSC, and is the University representative for regulatory inspections (NRC, DCDH, etc.). Provides leadership in radiation safety policy and procedure development. Provides technical direction and advice to the Sr. HP on unusual, complex and critical problems identified during their review of experimental procedures and during responses to radioactive material (RAM) or radiation producing device (RPD) incidents. This position is required to be on call for emergencies after regular business hours, weekends, and holiday. Serves as the GURO, the individual responsible for trustworthy & reliability reviews (background and criminal history checks) required for unescorted access to the research irradiator facility (RIF). Managers the Laser Safety Program. Assists with other duties as assigned.
Work Interactions
Reports directly to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). The RSO provides technical and programmatic assistance and leadership for the radiation safety staff. The RSO is the direct supervisor of two full-time staff members. Provides assistance to the RSC for maintaining regulatory compliance. The RSO position is federally mandated by License to provide oversight of RAM in education and research.
Requirements And Qualifications
  • 5 years of progressive work experience in radiation safety and/or operational Health Physics experience.
  • Knowledge of current and proposed regulations including 10 CFR, 21 CFR, 40 CFR, 49 CFR and District of Columbia radiological regulations
  • 40hr Certification as Radiation Safety Officer RSO
  • Knowledge of (Laser Safety) ANSI Z-136 Series preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted
  • The desired candidate will hold a Bachelor’s Degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or other relevant science related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.
  • NRRPT and/or CHP preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Supervisory Experience Preferred.
