Job Description

In alignment with the Novartis support strategy, the purpose of this role is to lead, develop, implement, and oversee effective Health, Safety Environment (HSE), Novartis Emergency Management (NEM) systems in line with local, regional and global expectations.

At a small site, this position is the highest ranking HSE associate providing leadership, technical expertise for HSE activities and objectives. Could directly manage 1-2 contractors.

What you will be doing:

Provide technical expertise and leadership for one or more HSE activities and objectives as determined by the site’s needs: Develops effective and efficient HSE systems and supporting programs (e.g. Biological Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Laboratory Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Toxicology, and Safety Culture, Risk Portfolio & Novartis Emergency Management programs) that are appropriate in consideration of the site’s complexity, population, regulatory burden/environment, criticality and location.

Ensures that robust systems are in place to demonstrate and verify compliance with all pertinent Novartis HSE Management System requirements, Global Operating Procedures, HSE regulations, permits, statutes, local ordinances and/or other externally driven requirements.

Ensures that Novartis HSE services are coordinated and provided to the site in an effective and efficient manner.
Partners with Novartis site management as well as HSE Regional and Global Expert Teams.

Manages, tracks, and controls expenses to ensure budgets targets are met.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between: $118,400.00 and $177,600.00 USD per year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Minimum requirements

Minimum BA/BS in a safety management, industrial hygiene, environmental science, occupational health and/or medicine, engineering, or related field. Masters Degree preferred. One or more relevant professional certifications also strongly recommended (PE, CSP, CIH, CHMM or other).

Experience: 5-10 years of relevant Health, Safety, Environment program experience, preferably with 3+ years of that experience at a managerial level.

Skills:
Highly motivated self-starter with a willingness to assume responsibility, take ownership for his/her work and intelligently challenge the status quo. Competency in analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to develop and maintain partnerships with internal as well as external organizations to achieve goals. Ability to build relationships and manage key vendors. Strong leadership, influencing and communication skills. A working knowledge of pharma or biotechnology industry and the peculiarities of pharma Health, Safety, Environment & Business Continuity issues is a plus. Strong working knowledge and experience with HSE Regulations, HSE Management Systems, Risk Management, Auditing Expertise, Incident Response & Crisis Management (Novartis Emergency Management Program), Scientific Process Knowledge and Laboratory Safety.
