Job Description
Supervisor for Quality Assurance on 2nd Shift
Overseeing the Quality department, managing the Quality Lab, maintaining quality records and testing procedures for products and raw materials, informing the Quality Supervisor of quality issues, ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices, managing the Export program and all associated documentation and liaison with USDA. Occasionally filling in as a Quality Technician during staff shortages.
Primary Responsibilities
  • May conduct quality systems audits with PCQI.
  • Support facility during inspections, customer audits, communications, commercialization, and other interactions with regulatory agencies or customers.
  • Responsible for shift planning for established full-time and temp QA positions and scheduling QA employees for work assignments, schedules, and PTO coverage.
  • In collaboration with other Supervisors, assesses plant Quality issues and improvements, implements, and evaluates new quality procedures required by regulatory and company requirements. Assures quality and GMP’s practices are followed.
  • Initiate quality complaint investigations. Verify corrective action completion and continued conformance.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
  • Understands each technician’s job and working with them on reducing products on hold.
  • Notify Quality Supervisors, Manufacturing Manager and Superintendent of identified issues and ensure proper communication. Provide technical support for resolution of quality problems with Quality Supervisor.
  • Support the plant Food Safety & Quality System to produce safe quality food, acting as SQF Practitioner or equivalent until certified.
  • Lead the plant Quality Improvement Program in the areas of specifications and trends review, complaint investigation and corrective action, and capability of the Quality team.
  • In conjunction with the Quality Supervisor, update and support food safety programs and food safety systems: HACCP, sanitation, and environmental monitoring program. Maintain the quality systems for the plant. Ensure work instructions, SSOPs, procedures and other pertinent documentation is up to date working with the Document Control Coordinator. Recommend revisions to production work instructions as needed.
  • Responsible for the daily supervision of the Quality Control technicians in regards to training and development, assessment and motivation of technicians. Includes input on annual performance reviews and establishment of measurable objectives for associates.
  • Act as the technical liaison for QC department in the absence of the Quality Supervisor: Externally with customers and vendors, and internally with R&D and supply chain for all Quality processes.
  • Ensure updated product specifications including customer specifications and raw material specifications are in use and reflect any changes or product use requirements. Monitor any third party test results in relation to Quality specifications.
  • Preserve procedures for top product and customer service quality, product disposition from Hold orders internally and externally, aged inventory policy.
  • Communicate and enforce standards in the areas of regulatory compliance under guidance of the Quality Supervisor.
  • Lead/train and/or participate in internal audits and mock recalls while ensuring compliance to internal quality policies and applicable local regulations through the audits, observations, process reviews, and development of corrective actions with management.
  • Ensures the safety of all employees. Follows up on all quality and operational issues to resolution.
  • Maintains and communicates information of Quality staff issues to Quality Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with quality management systems, SSOPs, Environmental hygiene programs, prerequisite programs and HACCP.
  • Effective at organizing and managing multiple work tasks of a diverse nature.
  • At least 4-5 years of quality/manufacturing experience in the food production industry is necessary.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Prior experience managing and/or supporting Customer audit, Mock Recalls/Recalls, and Regulatory Audits: FDA/USDA, SQF, MOSA, RSPO and able to lead regulatory inspection independently in the absence of the Quality Supervisor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Customer complaint resolution experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of relevant GFSI standards such as FDA, SQF, MOSA, RSPO, USDA.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Food Safety regulations, FSMA and industry and market trends is desired.
Working Environment
  • While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical Demands
  • While performing the job duties, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
