DESCRIPTION:

Public Health Madison/Dane County has an opening for a Public Health Program Coordinator. The eligible list created form this posting may be used for future Public Health Program Coordinator vacancies for the next six (6) months.

DEFINITION

Under the general supervision of a Public Health Supervisor, a Public Health Program Coordinator serves as agency subject matter expert on an identified content area and works to build capacity, collaboration with state and community stakeholders across multiple sectors, consultation, technical assistance, program development, strategic communications, facilitation of community alliances, and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies. Program Coordinators are responsible for planning tasks, implementing activities, assessing outcomes, and coordinating partners toward collective action within a specific program or content area.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAM COORDINATORS may work in one of the following areas:

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD):

This position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and implementation of PHMDC’s plans, activities, and initiatives related to alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis misuse prevention and harm reduction. Serves as agency subject matter expert on alcohol policy, tobacco policy, and cannabis policy and regulation. The position is responsible for capacity building, collaboration with state and community stakeholders across multiple sectors, consultation, technical assistance, program development and evaluation, strategic communications, facilitation of community alliances, and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies.

Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction:

This position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and implementation of PHMDC’s plans, activities, and initiatives related to substance misuse prevention and harm reduction. Serves as agency subject matter expert on drug policy, substance misuse prevention, and planning community-based strategies to reduce drug harm. The position is responsible for collaboration with state and community partners across multiple sectors, technical assistance, program development, strategic communications, facilitation of community alliances, youth engagement and advocacy to implementprevention strategies. This position has primary responsibility for the coordination of partnerships to create alignment to prevent substance misuse and reduce drug harms in Dane County.

Oral Health:

This position is responsible for the day-to-day coordination and implementation of PHMDC’s plans, activities, and initiatives related to oral health. Serves as the agency subject matter expert on oral health, access to oral health care, and works to reduce the burden of oral disease such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education, Training and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in (Public Health, Public Policy, Health Education, Emergency Management, Community Health, Evaluation), progressive experience in substance use prevention, substance use harm reduction, public health advocacy and evidence-based policy development, or a related field (i.e. community development, behavioral health, health education, public administration, community organizing/engagement, coalition development, health equity). Also, requires three (3) years of program management and/or program coordination experience.

Special Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Availability to work as required occasionally during nights, weekends, and during special events. Work related to public health emergencies may require availability 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week. Conferences or seminars may require travel outside of Dane County.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Professional office work environment. Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, stooping, twisting, turning, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching within normal ranges. Ability to lift and move a variety of work-related materials weighing up to 25 pounds (with/without assistance). Prolonged computer and phone use. Work requires flexibility to work with diverse populations and communities including people of different cultures, values and beliefs, in rural, urban or suburban settings, and with individuals and groups at different learning styles and abilities. Flexibility to work with individuals and groups where and when they are available is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of best practices for substance use prevention and harm reduction. Knowledge of the principles of program coordination, strategic planning, community engagement, and relationship management Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to analyze complex public health issues, data, evidence informed practices and to make sound recommendations. Ability to coordinate, direct and manage the work of others including community and interagency partners. Ability to effectively establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, public officials, and the general public.
