Job Description

The Psychiatrist will be responsible for providing in-patient specialty psychiatric care to patients admitted to the Arizona State Hospital including: performing diagnostic examinations, prescribing medications, developing behavioral plans, monitoring care and progress of the patient toward treatment and recovery goals. This position is involved in leading a multi-disciplinary team, overseeing the work of the team in developing and implementing a plan of care, working with outpatient teams, the patient, families, and community providers of care to coordinate a continuum of care for assigned patients. The Psychiatrist is also responsible for completing inpatient documentation, preparation of reports for legal and administrative purposes, participate in hospital committees and in the development of policies and procedures and standards for mental health program services, working with other professionals in a recovery model including nurses, social workers, psychologists, rehabilitation staff, and family medical physicians and physician’s assistants.


Job Duties:
  • Works with other professionals in recovery model including nurses, social workers, psychologists, rehabilitation staff, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants. Attends hospital committees and medical staff meetings.
  • Performs diagnostic examinations, prescribes medications, and monitors care and progress of patients toward treatment and recovery goals.
  • Completes required documentation, prepares reports for legal and administration purposes
  • Conducts psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, and treatment of seriously mentally ill patients committed to ASH.
  • Provides leadership for multidisciplinary treatment team and oversees the work of the team in developing and implementing a plan of care.
  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of standard of practice in psychiatry including the diagnosis of mental disorders and current knowledge of evidenced based treatment for mental disorders.

Skills:
  • Skills in the array of psychiatric treatments including psychotherapies and psychopharmacology
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Work experience in leading a multidisciplinary treatment team
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Organization and time management skills

Selective Preference(s):
  • The ideal candidate will have experience working with the seriously mentally ill.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07.
  • Must possess a medical license to practice in the State of Arizona.
  • Requires an MD, DO, MBBS or equivalent from an accredited school of medicine; completion of a residency program in psychiatry, and board eligibility or board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit.
