Remote Position with 30-50% Travel required


I. Job Summary


This position requires an engineer with significant experience in the Recycling and solid waste industry. The ideal candidate will possess superior problem solving and management skills that will be applied to a diverse portfolio of technical projects. You will be directly responsible for engineering and construction at Recycling & solid waste disposal facilities, will communicate with senior management, and direct and mentor junior staff. You will be continually challenged to use your knowledge and skills to advance WM’s status as the leader, and innovator, in providing comprehensive waste management services to a variety of clients.


II. Essential Duties And Responsibilities


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:


  • Assists in training and provides mentorship and supervision of WM technical staff assigned to your team.
  • Conducts on-site technical visits. Monitors field installation and testing. Reviews and evaluates operational efficiency of equipment and systems at various facilities.
  • Uses prescribed methods and performs portions of a broader and detailed assignments which requires the application of advanced engineering techniques and procedures in support of an engineering department.
  • Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data, recognizes discrepancies in results and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes.
  • Writes technical reports to document engineering analysis and findings.
  • Collaborates with other professionals and subject matter experts within WM to provide innovative, cost effective engineering solutions to identified or potential mechanical, operational, environmental, and compliance issues at Recycling facilities, transfer stations, and other businesses in your area and potentially across the Company. Provide technical expertise and direction to management and other functional areas such as finance, Operations, legal and safety to present a clear path to resolution.
  • Participates in review of acquisitions and coordination and evaluation of divestitures, including proforma modeling assistance and interaction with corporate and executive management during due diligence.
  • Manages Recycling construction projects from overseeing the preparation of engineering and construction plans to final approval. Tasks will include managing consultants, contractors and budgets, preparation of bid documents, bid letting, contract administration, coordinating contractors, construction quality assurance, and machinery/materials order and delivery.
  • Provides continuous evaluation of project sites for adherence to construction and permit documents and for site expansion potential through site visits.
  • Reviews data and prepares recommendations, summaries, and cost estimates for consideration by senior engineers or managers.
  • Conducts feasibility studies for proposed equipment and systems. May assist senior engineer in reviewing design and development plans and/or cost estimates for completing the proposed projects and evaluates engineering proposals and specifications.
  • Engages, directs, and manages professional consulting and Engineering firms that perform a variety of work tasks for Recycling and solid waste facilities, such as preparing permit applications and construction plans, conducting site monitoring, construction site visits, etc. Will be responsible for final work product.
  • Actively manages and tracks capital budgets for engineering and construction projects and report to local management and corporate using Company procedures.


III. Supervisory Responsibilities


Functioning as the team lead on various projects is inherent to the position.


IV. Qualifications


The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.


Education and Experience
  • Experience: Five (5) years of related experience (in addition to education requirements).
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree (accredited) in Engineering.
  • None required.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
  • Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel up to 60% of time, including travel to remote locations.
  • Understanding of accounting processes and P&L statements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to lead engineering, and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • In depth knowledge of the Recycling field
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

V. Work Environment
  • Site work may involve exposure to physical occupational risks associated with recyclables, chemicals, fuels, and construction operations such as dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes and/or similar.
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, tablet data entry, office machine operation, etc.).

Required Travel: 30-50% of time
The expected salary range for this position is $_99,700__ - 149,040.00____. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a bonus.
