Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Historical Interpreter II position serves as the Programs Coordinator for the site and is a critical part of site operations, visitor services, safety, and education. This position supervises temporary employees.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts outreach to our support group, schools, civic organizations, military groups, and peer entities.
  • Supervises 3-5 temporary staff members and coordinates the site’s internship program to include scheduling and budgeting.
  • Conducts historical research about the battle and the Civil War era and presents this research via tours, talks, writing, and exhibits.
  • Serves as the giftshop manager for the site; purchases items for the gift shop and the site via e-Procurement; ensures that giftshop receipts are deposited and that the appropriate paperwork is completed.
  • Coordinate 5-10 special events each year to include publicity, recruiting living history presenters, budgeting, and etc.
  • Serve as the site’s lead interpreter and ensures that excellent visitor services are offered on a day-to-day basis to include greeting, guiding, and answering inquiries in person, on the phone, and digitally.
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the site’s visitor center and assists maintenance staff as needed for site upkeep and improvement.
The Battle of Bentonville in March 1865, was the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought in North Carolina. With nearly 2,300 acres preserved, Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is the largest historic site in the state. The site’s mission is to interpret the Battle of Bentonville, life in North Carolina during the Civil War, and to preserve the battlefield’s historical resources. The work schedule is Tuesday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm, with some evening work required during special events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:

  • Demonstrated experience with communicating effectively in written and oral form.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and supervising temporary employees and/or volunteers.
  • Must have the ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, and undertaking special event programming of various sizes.
  • Must have the ability to spend extended periods of time outside during hot, cold, and inclement weather.
  • Basic computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated experience with producing text for tours, talks, reports and exhibits using first person historical research. A writing sample showing the applicant’s ability to produce text from first person research may be requested during the interview process.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of U.S. History, specifically the Civil War era.
  • Demonstrated experience with basic cash management, basic accounting and purchasing skills, and making accurate cash register sales.
Management Preferences:
  • Retail experience, preferably ordering and budgeting.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in public history, history, or a related field.
  • Three years' experience developing or assisting with programming in a Historic Site or Museum setting.
  • Experience with Photoshop, Canva, or other design software.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience in giving or developing museum tours.

Or

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
