Job Summary


The Program Officer (PO) is a member of the U.S. Jewish Grantmaking team which is part of the larger U.S. Jewish Portfolio. We support efforts to build a joyful and inclusive Jewish community connected to Israel and committed to making the world a better place. Through three focus areas, we aim to help young Jews engage with Jewish values and experiences, support opportunities to connect with Israel, and shape a thriving sector of Jewish organizations and leaders. We seek a Program Officer eager to work on our priority areas and who has experience already doing so with curiosity, nuance and rigor.


LOCATION: This hybrid role has flexible location options of Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA, or New York, NY (proximate to a Schusterman office) with the ability to travel to in-person meetings monthly.


The PO reports to the Director, U.S. Jewish Grantmaking.


Responsibilities


Job responsibilities include but will not be limited to:


  • Travel periodically in order to maintain relationships with external partners and grantees and support the strategies of the U.S. Jewish Grantmaking team agendas
  • Ensure grants meet Schusterman’s established standards and align with Schusterman’s strategic initiatives and grantmaking strategy, as well as the potential grantee’s mission
  • Contribute to strategy development and implementation for the U.S. Jewish Grantmaking agenda through activities such as the development of field mapping and landscape analyses, support for convenings and other special projects and duties as assigned
  • Develop and steward relationships with other Schusterman entities and with Schusterman grantees, peer philanthropic partners, program partners and participants
  • Conduct due diligence on grant applications, including both qualitative and quantitative analyses, such as business plan analysis, market analysis, interviewing experts, benchmarking and financial modeling, etc.
  • May represent Schusterman at conferences and/or meetings, as well as assist leadership in execution of convenings and/or collaborative learning opportunities
  • Assist grantees in delivering their grant goals, meeting milestones and overcoming obstacles. Act as a thought partner to grantee professionals
  • Manage a portfolio of grants (with a focus on Israel-engaged organizations), including regular check-ins with grantees, analyzing and summarizing grantee reports, and more
  • Make grant recommendations to senior staff via rigorous written memos that synthesize a multitude of inputs and reflect strong analysis and case-making

Required Qualifications


The following qualifications are representative of the high level of demonstrated skills, maturity, judgment and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies required of Schusterman employees:


  • Experience applying a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lens to leadership projects and programs preferred
  • Proven track record of being an excellent team member who is able to step up wherever needed and has a versatile skillset
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with creativity and with independence
  • Demonstrated flexibility and resilience in dealing with ambiguity, highly organized and efficient, able to prioritize work based on minimal direction and multiple competing priorities
  • Direct experience working on Israel-related projects and/or organizations and work with diverse Jewish communities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to develop cooperative and effective working relationships with key constituents— supervisory personnel, co-workers, colleagues, current grantees, vendors and other philanthropic partners
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required
  • PC skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent judgment, an ability to exercise discretion and tact in difficult or confidential situations and an ability to project a positive, professional image to the public required
  • Knowledge of the Jewish community required
  • 6+ years of professional experience working within the philanthropic, non-profit and/or other relevant fields
  • Ability to travel up to 25% required.


Compensation


Competitive hiring range of $100,000- $125,000 based on experience and on Schusterman’s commitment tointernal equity. A strong benefits package is also offered. Schusterman encourages ongoing professionaldevelopment and supports activities aligned with one’s individual career growth plan. Schusterman will not cover relocation expenses for this position.
