Public Works Transportation

The County of San Diego is seeking qualified individuals and is currently accepting job applications for Program Coordinator - Public Works Transportation Option to fill two immediate vacancies in the Department of Public Works - Transportation Division: DPW Fleet Manager & Cleanup and Sanitation Program Coordinator. The eligible list may also be used to fill additional vacancies within the Department of Public works during the next six (6) months.
DPW Fleet Manager
The future incumbent will be responsible for acquisition, disposal, and operational support of a diverse fleet with approximately 500 units. The fleet includes vehicles in Classes 1 (SUVs and Pickups) through 8 (tractors and straight trucks), equipment and implement trailers, off-road construction equipment, aircraft firefighting equipment, and road and sewer system maintenance equipment.
Key duties for this position:
  • Maintains a rate system to facilitate budgeting and distribution of equipment operational costs among the department's vehicle users
  • Manages budget and spending for six Internal Service Funds, with a total of approximately $40 million in assets
  • Plans and implements the Fleet’s sustainability plan to reduce greenhouse gases and encourage use of electrified vehicles
  • Develops and executes an annual acquisition budget of approximately $6 million
  • Monitors compliance with existing and proposed laws, rules, and regulations impacting fleet operations, and advises management on current and potential financial and operational impacts
  • Coordinates with the County's Department of General Services, Fleet Management Division for maintenance and repair of the fleet
Cleanup and Sanitation Program Coordinator
The future incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the department’s encampment abatement program tasked with specialized cleanup of trash and debris associated with homelessness at DPW facilities.
Key duties for this position:
  • Leads as needed special projects related to encampments at DPW facilities
  • Administers the cleanup contract and supports encampment abatement activities at all DPW maintained facilities
  • Ensures compliance with existing and proposed laws, rules, regulations, and County policies when working with homeless encampments
  • Coordinates with DPW road crews, Department of Parks and Recreation, and other agencies including Caltrans on encampment related facility impacts that cross jurisdictions
  • Collaborates with the County’s Office of Homeless Solutions and Sheriff’s Department on complex issues related to homelessness and advises management on operational and political impacts
Selection interview Dates
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins in June 2023. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

Minimum Qualifications
Qualified applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency, AND, four (4) years of professional experience performing analysis, budget management, program administration, engineering, or closely related work in a program performing planning and analysis; OR a combination of education and/or experience as stated above.

Evaluation
