This program coordinator will provide support for the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (AD-DEI).


The NSOE has a strong commitment to DEI represented by its DEI strategic plans and DEI Implementation Plan. These DEI commitments involve the entire NSOE community, including all students, staff, and faculty, and also involve community engagement. This Program Coordinator will coordinate DEI activities within the NSOE, coordinate with our graduate-student DEI Fellows, communicate DEI activities within the Nicholas School, lead events, assist with and/or co-build new initiatives, and evaluate the NSOE’s DEI programs and activities.


Occupational Summary

The Program Coordinator for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will plan, coordinate, and administer DEI activities that primarily involve Nicholas School of the Environment (NSOE) students at the Masters level, as well as students at all levels, staff, faculty, and occasionally community partners. The Program Coordinator for DEI will also develop, coordinate, and advise on strategic initiatives, particularly as the AD of DEI develops annual DEI priorities for the school and in enacting DEI initiatives and data collection. This position may exercise supervision over Duke staff, and coordinate the work of DEI Fellows, who are primarily Masters of Environmental Management/Forestry students.


Work Performed


In particular, the Program Coordinator for DEI will:


Support, Develop, and Lead DEI Initiatives (60%)

  • Build, organize, and lead curricula, affinity groups, training, and field trips with NSOE and community partners.
  • Schedule and plan itineraries for NSOE advisory meetings and town halls, and develop and coordinator ideas and concepts for program themes, develop materials and resources for these events, and expand or replace existing programming and materials.
  • Identify and meet regularly with students leaders of various NSOE groups to develop and coordinate NSOE DEI initiatives.
  • Prepare budgets and grants, and seek both internal and external funding to support DEI goals; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds as appropriate.
  • Budget for and coordinate DEI initiatives, particularly including but not limited to meetings, affinity groups, town halls, and field trips.

DEI Communications and Outreach (25%)

  • Craft strategy for, advise, craft and release response messages about current events in collaboration with community members of affected identities.
  • Coordinate public relations activities and conceptualize, develop, and release monthly DEI newsletters and coordinate article development with DEI fellows; promotional materials; educational materials; press releases; ads and fliers; as well as maintain and add materials to the DEI website, including video editing and transcription;
  • Maintain liaison with other DEI and identity-focused programs, offices and departments at Duke to coordinate DEI activities and to accomplish the NSOE DEI strategic plan objectives; as well as interface with some external organizations as appropriate to ensure cooperative efforts are enhanced and equitable.

Evaluate DEI Activities (15%)

  • Develop, modify, implement, and analyze on-going and novel evaluations of NSOE DEI programs and initiatives
  • Develop and implement semesterly pulse-check surveys for faculty, staff, and students, and implementing larger-scale DEI evaluations.
  • Analyze data, compare to past data, and report in a way that is clear and easy to understand.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


Preferred Qualifications/Skills

Bachelors' Degree in communications, environmental education, community engagement, or other related fields. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, demonstrated writing/editing skills, experience with WordPress or website maintenance, social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc.), and project management. Demonstrated skills and training in diversity and equity, including experience holding affinity group space. Prior Duke experience is a plus. Minimum Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.


Minimum Experience

Work requires one year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.
