Merced College is offering a full-time, tenure track position in English at the Los Banos Campus. The successful candidate must be dedicated to serving students of varying skill levels, be a discipline expert in the field, and be a champion of innovative and dynamic pedagogical approaches focused on student success. Moreover, the successful candidate will exhibit a passion for educating a diverse student population through culturally-responsive pedagogical teaching methods and demonstrate the use of effective practices for engaging students with diverse learning needs, backgrounds, and academic goals. Lastly, the successful candidate will be responsible for enhancing curriculum including modernizing and increasing the accessibility of the programs offered, including the use of technology to deliver instruction in the classroom.

General Description:
Professor of English is a full time, tenure-track position in the Humanities Department at the Merced College Los Banos Campus under the general direction of the Dean of Instruction. The professor will teach a variety of courses in the field of English, as well as collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines, since the Los Banos Campus is a smaller unit of cross-functional disciplines. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include evening, weekend, and variable hours. The primary teaching assignment will include teaching face-to-face at the Los Banos Campus with few online offerings, and is subject to change as needed.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:


  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
OR
  • Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism
OR
  • The equivalent
AND
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.
Preferred:
  • Ability to relate the practical and the theoretical aspects of the subject matter to the student
  • Experience teaching in different modalities, such as Asynchronous, Hybrid and Synchronous Zoom
  • Experience meeting the diverse needs of students
  • Experience with working with learning communities
  • Current technology skills related to teaching the discipline; a willingness to pursue future technological developments; and a commitment to integrating technology into the curriculum

Cost is $12.00/month for 10 months/year. We do not pay anything during June and July. This $12.00 covers the following as long as the members use Plan providers:
