LOCATION: Chelsea, MI


Sheridan MI has operated in Chelsea, Michigan, for more than 70 years of service to the book publishing industry. Our customers depend on us to covert their ideas into one of the most important inventions man ever made, a book of printed words.


Job Summary


The primary purpose of the Production Supervisor is to manage manufacturing operations on shift to meet daily production requirements. The Production Supervisor will ensure on-time delivery of high-quality books and provide continuous improvement in regard to the manufacturing process including production cycle, workflow, and increased throughput.


Supervisory Responsibilities


  • Oversee daily workflow of the department(s).
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Measure and control the quality of the product leaving the shift by reviewing and managing the use of the standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure company polices are followed by all employees and enforce discipline when appropriate.
  • Lead shift meetings regarding safety, policies, performance, etc.
  • Maintain proper amount of supplies and materials utilized by the department(s).
  • Motivate the workforce to engage employees and drive improvements.
  • Manage and maintain preventive maintenance programs for all equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide on-going training and development of personnel to maintain a competent work force.
  • Consistently evaluate staff. Measure and improve their performance by growing their self-esteem through coaching and recognition of their accomplishments.
  • Manage and control output of the shift to ensure all schedules are being met or exceeded.
  • Actively participate in safety committees and communication team meetings.
  • Author and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as required.
  • Communicate with managers and assist in the development of programs that improve the flow of information and the effectiveness of the departments.
  • Administer proper cross-training of employees on the shift to maintain the flexibility of the department(s).
  • Maintain a safe workplace in compliance with Sheridan’s commitment to safety. Ensure safety throughout the facility, including proper training of employees, reinforcement of such training, and recognizing and eliminating unsafe conditions.
  • Appropriately address performance issues as needed.
  • Accurately arrange staffing schedules for all scheduled equipment.


Basic Qualifications


  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Associate degree in Business Administration, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to work independently, or in a team environment effectively.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to focus, anticipate and recognize the needs of others.
  • Must be able to assess situations, problem solve, and make decisions in day-to-day situations.


Desired Skills And Abilities


  • Minimum 3 years of manufacturing supervision experience.
  • Book printing/binding experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required.


Physical Requirements


  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Schedule is Monday to Friday, 3 PM to 11 PM – 40 hours/week


  • Night shift pays an extra 8% on hours worked
  • Overtime pays time and a half after 40 hours per week


Travel Requirements


  • Minimal travel for seminars, job fairs, company meetings, etc.
  • May require occasional overnight stay.
