Job Description
The Show

The Journal is a daily narrative news podcast made in partnership between Gimlet and the Wall Street Journal. Each day, we tell one important news story in 15-20 minutes. Our show focuses on money and business, applying those lenses to general news or zooming in on business stories that other outlets do not tell. We have covered everything from the rise of ChatGPT, to the ripple effect of the Supreme Court’s overturning of affirmative action in college admissions, to Disney’s financial troubles. We’ve published explosive investigations into Facebook and the telehealth company Cerebral alongside the Wall Street Journal’s print paper.

The Role.

The Journal is hiring an intern to join the team for the Fall/Winter of 2023 (October through January). This is a paid, full time role based anywhere in the United States, working East coast hours. Our ideal candidate is a fan of the show, an enthusiastic consumer of news, curious about business, and excited about narrative storytelling. We are looking for someone who’s eager to learn the ins and outs of making a daily news show -- whether that means supporting hosts or producers in their roles, listening and responding to honest and open feedback, or contributing ideas of their own. Experience with podcasting or audio editing is a big plus.

  • To apply, please submit a cover letter briefly explaining what you like about the show, what could be improved and why you’d be a good fit for the role, along with a resume.*

What You'll Do:

  • Pitch story ideas Help make the best show possible
  • Cut audio for daily productions needs (there will be training on this)
  • Support producers in daily and long-term production needs
  • Find and book guests
  • Find scoring and archival tape for episodes
  • Attend interviews and edits of episodes in the works

What You'll Do:

  • A clear and open communication style
  • The determination to track down archival audio and facts
  • Some familiarity with audio editing software ( If you know ProTools, great! If not, we’ll teach you.)
  • Enthusiasm for working quickly and to a deadline
  • Experience in some kind of news environment
  • A desire to tell new, compelling stories
  • Humility and a desire to improve

The United States hourly rate for this position is 25.00 USD. This position is overtime eligible. These rates may be modified in the future. The benefits available for this position include paid flexible holidays
