Job Title:
Principal - Elementary School
Reports to: Chief of Schools
Status: 12 Months, Exempt

Salary: NC Principal Salary Pay Scale


Qualifications:
Masters's Degree in Educational or School Leadership (Administration or
Supervision); NC Principal’s License; Successful teaching and coaching experience.


Position Overview:
The successful principal in Mooresville Graded Schools leads all aspects of the school and school community to ensure students reach their full potential. Central to this mission is the ability to assist teachers in preparing students for life in the 21st century and beyond. Principals create and enhance a learning environment where sound curriculum and instruction are implemented for every child, every day. The principal supervises and leads all staff. As the chief administrator, the principal develops and implements policies, programs, budgets, and curriculum for the success of the school.


Responsibilities, Duties, and Expectations:


Instructional and Cultural Leadership

Defines and models a commitment to all children by:
  • Strategically monitoring and assessing school-wide instructional programs to ensure that it meets the specific learning needs of all students
  • Effectively coaching and mentoring faculty and staff members in their daily instructional practice as well as their management of student conduct and collegial relationships
  • Researching and maintaining current knowledge of educational theory, practice, and trends integrated with technological advancements to lead in a one-to-one district
  • Initiating, designing, and implementing school-wide instructional programs meeting the specific learning needs of all students
  • Pursuing and planning for positive academic outcomes for students that are congruent with the district’s mission and vision

Micro-Political and Human Resource Leadership

Involves stakeholders in the decision-making process for the school by:
  • Collaborating with the representation of all stakeholders to develop and communicate the school’s mission and vision as aligned with the district’s mission and vision
  • Creating an environment conducive to effective communication among all by establishing formal and informal systems where stakeholders can provide consistent input to enhance the school culture and ensure student success
  • Organizing and maintaining a School Improvement Team made up of representatives from all stakeholders for the purpose of making joint decisions to improve and enhance school programming
  • Communicating effectively with all stakeholders as the formal liaison between the school, the district, and the community in order to problem-solve and strategize for student success
  • Conducting and facilitating faculty/staff meetings for continuous professional development and training of educators to enhance student achievement

Strategic Leadership
Creates and sustains a school environment that fosters systemic vision and culture by:
  • Expecting and rewarding individual and team endeavors that align with the school’s mission and vision
  • Informing and involving district leadership in the school’s events, activities, and visionary efforts
  • Consistently promoting the vision and positive culture through visible artifacts, school-wide activities, teacher-led events, and student-led efforts
  • Planning, ensuring, and assessing the congruence of school activities with the school’s mission and vision

External Development and Managerial Leadership

Seeks support from all constituencies in obtaining commitment and resources needed for school effectiveness and improvement by:

  • Collaborating with parents, students, community members, and staff regarding how to best meet the needs of the school community to ensure a safe and nurturing environment conducive to maximizing student learning
  • Preparing and administering the school budget for an efficient, effective, and productive school functioning
  • Assessing the need for and facilitating parent and community training and events related to the progress of the overall school program
  • Supervising and evaluating the extracurricular program which complements the academic focus of the school
  • Participates in the selection of and evaluates all employees assigned to the school making recommendations for employment to the Chief Human Resources Officer.
  • Delegates authority to responsible school personnel, as needed
  • Assumes responsibility for compliance with all school laws, regulations, and policies
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Chief of Schools and Superintendent.
  • Strives to procure the necessary materials and resources for success in the school community

  • Skilled in evaluating and improving teachers’ performance; strong ability to coach staff for growth and continuous improvement.

  • Strong critical reading and writing skills to analyze reports, disaggregate data and write reports and memorandums.

Physical Requirements:
The following list includes the physical requirements of the position:

  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records processes, and do extensive reading and research
  • Must be able to perform basic life operational functions of standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including, computers, copiers, etc.
