Job Summary:

The Academy Charter High School Assistant Principal provides administrative and curriculum support to the Principal to ensure that the Academy provides a safe, productive learning environment of the highest quality and is aligned with NYS Common Core Learning Standards and Individual Educational Program mandates. The Assistant Principal participates in implementing policies, programs, and curriculum activities in a manner that promotes the educational development of all students. The Assistant Principal also engages actively in guiding the professional development of teaching staff, and facilitates effective partnering and communication with student families, the Instructional Leadership Team, staff, parents, scholars, and outside instructional consultants. The Assistant Principal will take on the operations of the school in the Principal’s absence when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Student orientation: Work with the administrative team by planning and conducting annual school orientation sessions and offsite trips.
  • Schoolwide Testing: oversee the administration of all testing programs (benchmark, interim, and NYS Common Core Standards)
  • Perform other duties assigned by the School Principal
  • Family and School Community Engagement: use effective strategies to communicate with a variety of audiences; make presentations to staff, students, and families as requested by the Principal; develop strong relationships with families, students, and staff members and; conduct or provide opportunities for parent education programs; assist families with school-related problems; collaborate closely with parents and work closely with students who have behavior challenges
  • Planning and Implementing School Curriculum & Student Achievement: work with the Principal to ensure implementation of NYS Common Core curriculum across assigned content areas; aid teachers in implementing effective instructional practices; work with the Principal and instructional coaches in documenting, communicating, and implementing scope and sequence for each content area; review syllabi, lesson plans, in-class/school wide assessments during the summer and school year to ensure rigor, appropriateness, and alignment with the NYS Common Core State Standards; monitor student achievement using benchmark and interim assessments on an on-going basis; use student achievement data and student work to drive daily and long-term instructional decisions; work with School Counselor and Dean of School Culture to administer dropout prevention program
  • Supervision, Evaluation, and Professional Development: supervise assigned personnel; conduct teacher evaluations utilizing the Charlotte Danielson framework according to the Academy’s evaluation protocols, and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions; supervise extra-curricular activities; actively participate in the creation and implementation of an individual and School wide Professional Development Plan that inspires personal growth and informs teaching practices; demonstrate knowledge of teaching standards to promote use of effective and data-informed practices by all staff; plan and conduct teacher training programs relating to classroom procedures, instructional materials/equipment, and teaching aids; attend teacher meetings, support teachers, and facilitate positive staff culture; provide feedback and coaching to teachers on implementation of instruction to improve academic outcomes
  • Student Attendance: Work closely with the guidance counselor in monitoring student attendance

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State teaching certification
  • 2-3 years teaching experience in a public school or charter school setting, or similar background
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, preferred
  • Previous experience as a School Building Leader in a public school or charter school setting, or similar background
  • Valid New York State School Building Leadership Certification
  • 2-3 years experience as a dean in a school, or similar background
