Job Description
Primary Work Address: 19700 Helix Drive, Ashburn, VA, 20147

Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in neuroscience and imaging. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually distinctive environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work. Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact. We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community. It is a uniquely innovative and collaborative atmosphere that reflects HHMI’s reputation for excellence.
About the role:
The Principal Optical Engineer creates novel groundbreaking instrumentation to advance research at the Janelia campus. They lead highly complex, team projects that include technical requirements outside of principal fields. They have a track record of high impact scientific/engineering contributions as demonstrated by patents, publications, products, and widely used instrumentation. The Principle Optical Engineer mentors junior engineers, provides technical leadership of others, and may direct the work of others. The position reports to the Engineering Manager of the department.
About the department:
The Janelia Experimental Technology (jET) group is a team of engineers, scientists, machinists, and technicians that create new and novel instruments to facilitate the cutting-edge research of Janelia. The jET group enables scientific research at Janelia by providing solutions to technical challenges that span a broad range of engineering and fabrication design spaces. Typical instruments are comprised of a wide range of custom designed optical, electro-mechanical, motion, machine vision, embedded software, and electronic components.

  • Study the project concepts, objectives, priorities, and requirements as well as analyze user and potential user input to identify and establish performance requirements and test methods for developed systems. Translate the requirements into engineering concepts, designs and plans.
  • Mentor other engineers.
  • Estimate projects costs for materials and labor and track such costs over project lifetime.
  • Recommend and pursue outsourcing as needed.
What you bring:
  • 10+ years of experience in designing and building the state-of-the-art Light Microscopy rigs for applications in life sciences.
  • Ability to perform optical designs and simulations in appropriate software such as ZEMAX.
  • Ability to generate detailed design drawings, bill of materials, and other documentation required to fabricate designs.
  • Ability to describe and explain design concepts, theory of operation, usage and instructions for developed designs.
  • Ability to translate varied and potentially ambiguous customer requests, which will be of a scientific as well as technical nature, into project requirements.
  • BS degree in Optical Physics, Optical Engineering, or related optical instrumentation engineering field. MS degree preferred.
